Canon mp970 All in One review

MP970 review

mp970
pros
Professional-level photo quality
35mm film-scanning capability
Ethernet networking included

cons
Awkward network installation
Lack of flash- and hard-drive USB support
Slow duplex printing
No fax

PC Magazine and CNet.com both deliver highly detailed reviews of the Pixma MP970 multifunction printer, with objective performance measures and comparisons. However, the reviews reach markedly different conclusions. TrustedReviews.com has a lighter overview that largely pits the Canon Pixma MP970 against the Pixma MP610. User reviews from Amazon.com and CNet.com complete the picture.

Reviewers whose focus is photo quality are all fond of Canon's Pixma MP970 multifunction printer. It allows users to print lab-quality photos with or without the aid of a computer, scans 35mm film and slides, and offers Ethernet networking as a standard feature. Not all reviewers are thrilled, however. And those who look beyond photo-centric printing complain about cumbersome network setup, slow print speeds (especially in duplex mode) and limited hardware support. Although the Canon MP970 is an excellent multifunction printer if you're mainly interested in photos, the Canon Pixma MX850 (@$280) gets better ratings for office functionality.

Mx850 All in One Review

Mx850

Mx850

Pros:
Excellent print quality for text and graphics
Exceptional photo printing
Great photo-printing features
Includes fax, scanning and copying

Cons:
Low-capacity automatic document feeder
Slow duplex printing
Difficult to network

Several computer magazines test the Canon Pixma MX850 in depth. PC Magazine's review is the best of these, and the printer gets an overall rating that can be used to compare it with other tested printers. The review in Macworld is also based on hands-on tests, but the magazine hasn't tested as many multifunction printers as PC Magazine. We also found a very detailed review at PrinterInfo.com. Owner reviews at Amazon.com complete the picture.

Experts and owners alike rate this printer very highly about Canon's Pixma MX850 multifunction printer. When it comes to speed and photo quality, tests conducted by PC Magazine and Macworld magazine show that few other multifunction printers come close to the MX850's superior performance. Text and graphics prints are also sharp and more than adequate for business use. The drawbacks mainly concern business functions, such as a relatively low-volume (35 pages) automatic document feeder and slow duplex (both sides of the page) printing. A number of reviewers and owners have a hard time setting up the Pixma MX850 for networking. The competing HP Officejet Pro L7680 (@ $330) gets slightly better reviews as a business printer. However, experts agree that Canon holds a firm lead when it comes to photo quality. Even more notably, users of the MX850 are overwhelmingly satisfied with their product, while owner reviews for HP's L7680 are more mixed.

MP610 All in one review

MP610

Mp610

Pros:
Outstanding print quality for text and photos
Good photo-printing features
Good value

Cons:
Slow duplex printing
Unimpressive scan quality
No fax

PC Magazine delivers the most thorough, balanced and comparative review of the Canon Pixma MP610, featuring a standardized approach to printer testing. TrustedReview.coms' review is similar in length but lacks the substance of PC Magazine's. About.com and PCPro.co.uk both provide subjective measures of output quality. Amazon.com rounds out the review sampling, providing a cross-section of real-world performance with user-contributed evaluations.

This printer can scan and copy but doesn't fax, reviewers consistently favor the Canon Pixma MP610 as the best choice. Though Epson printers generally maintain a slight edge when it comes to photo quality, experts say the Canon Pixma MP610 still outputs outstanding photos. Quality is reported to rival that of laser printers, making the MP610 suitable for all-purpose use. Duplex printing is on the slow side. Scan quality, while adequate, doesn't match what you'd get from a standalone scanner. Still, these two quibbles don't diminish the high scores for the Canon MP610. The Canon Pixma MX850 (@ $280) gets the best reviews.

MP470 all in one review

mp470

Pros:
Very good output quality in all print modes
Fast photo printing
Large selection of photo-printing features
Good value

Cons:
Slow text printing
Some controls are awkwardly placed
No automatic document feeder or fax

CNet.com is the only publication offering a detailed review of the Canon Pixma MP470. the reviewer marched the MP470 through a series of performance tests, carefully documents every step of the process, and holds the results against those from three competing models. PC World magazine also has an significantly less-detailed review consists of subjective descriptions of operation and performance. Users at Amazon.com offer a real-world use of the Pixma MP470.

Price point becomes a significant factor in evaluating the performance of under-$100 multifunction printers. The Canon Pixma MP470 steps away from the pack with greater performance consistency and more features than the competition. Experts are unanimously impressed with extensive photo-printing options. There is less consensus on output quality, considering the $100 price tag, this low-end Canon model is hard to beat. Photos are described as crisp, with decent color reproduction. Reports of text quality vary from acceptable to outstanding. If you can spend more, the Canon Pixma MP610 (@ $165) gets better ratings for photo output and speed
