Canon Digital SLRs and Lenses

Ranked #30,090 in Arts & Design, #979,552 overall

Canon SLR Cameras

Canon boasts a wide range of digital SLRs suited to every level of photographer. Both novice and experienced value-minded photographers look to Canon's Digital Rebel range for value and versatility at reasonable prices. Current Canon Digital Rebel cameras are the decedents of the first digital SLRs designed to be simultaneously affordable and effective for consumer use. Many beginner photographers are proud to note that the technology found in their affordable camera is near identical to the more expensive and highly sought after cameras of professionals. Because of the overall flexibility, user friendliness and superiority of Canon's products, the Digital Rebel is one of the most noticeable and popular digital SLR cameras around.

Canon lenses

Canon is also the leader in professional lenses. Canon lenses have an almost cult status among some. When take a look at what professional photographers use at the next sporting event you watch on television, do not be surprised if you see the iconic white painted and red lined lens barrels of the Canon "L series" on almost every photographers camera body. These "L series" lenses are the workhorses of the professional photographer population. They help produce results for the people who rely on photography to make a living. The optical technology and innovative features of these lenses makes its way into the consumer market place just like digital SLR technology does. Even more, some "L series" lenses are within the price range of the common consumer.

Canon also offers consumer specific lenses: the EF-S mount series. These lenses are much more affordable than top tier Canon lenses, yet they pack similar quality and features. Unfortunately, EF-S lenses do not work on the more expensive professional level Canon bodies with 1.3x field of view crop factor or full frame image sensor bodies. EF-S mount bodies, however, do accept EF mount lenses. This is an attractive feature that allows amateur photographers who own a 1.6x field of view crop factor body like the Digital Rebel to "step up" to professional level photography though the purchase of more expensive lenses and equipment.

Conclusion

One great feature of Canon digital camera bodies is the ability for the EF mount system (and the EF-S mount) to accept and use (with full function) lenses from older film cameras with an EF mount. Both Canon branded and non-Canon aftermarket lenses have been made for the EF mount since the 1980s. This means that just about any currently functional Canon lens will work on a Canon digital body. Old time Canon film camera users or owners of large EF mount Canon lens collections love this feature as it can save a huge amount of money during the traditionally expensive film to digital transition. Also, because Canon is a very popular manufacturer the market for used and non-Canon brand products (lenses, accessories, etc.) is booming. Since the 1980s, manufacturers have produced lenses and accessories that work with Canon EF mount cameras. These products are abundant and relatively inexpensive in the used market.
