The Bulldogs Rugby League Football club

The Bulldogs are a Sydney based rugby league football club playing in the National Rugby League (NRL) Telstra Premiership competition.
The Bulldogs entered the New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL) in 1935, as Canterbury-Bankstown. Their nickname at the time was the Berries.
The were also called the Country Bumpkins because of the CB emblem and the fact that they recruited many players from rural areas.

The Bulldogs

The Bulldogs have won eight premierships in 1938, 1942, 1980, 1984, 1985, 1988, 1995, 2004.
Minor premierships in 1938, 1942, 1947, 1984, 1993, 1994.

The Bulldogs first year in the competition was 1935 and it was a disaster.
They had no home ground or training facilites and had to train on a paddock with car headlights to light the way on dark nights.
That first year saw their worse defeats in history.
Two weeks in a row they lost 91-6 to St George and then 87-7 to Eastern Suburbs.
They also lost to Wests 65-11.
Canterbury forward Frank Sponberg stated that 'The only thing that kept them going that first year was their sense of humour and the feeling of belonging to their district'.
In 1936 Belmore Oval became the Bulldogs home ground. The team performance improved immensely with their own ground and training facilities. Just three years after their horrible start, they won their first premiership by defeating Easts 19-6.

In 1978 the nickname of 'The Berries' was changed to 'The Bulldogs'
In 1997 the Bulldogs went to Super League and then rejoined the NRL the following season.

The club has great success during the 1980's rivalling Parramatta for the Minor Premierships and Premierships. They were nicknamed 'The Entertainers' as this young side was very enthusiastic and played a free-running game which was great to watch.

The use of Belmore Sports Ground stopped in 1994. The Bulldogs played some home games at the Parramatta Stadium as this stadium had better facilities and they were also trying to broaden their supporter base.
In 1996 the Bulldogs moved back to Belmore and stayed there until 1998.
Now all home games are played at ANZ stadium at Sydney Olympic Park.

Roosters - The Bulldogs were stripped of premiership points in 2002 over salary cap breaches. This cost them the premiership and the Roosters went on to win it.
Also many Bulldogs players left to play with the Roosters adding to the rivalry.

Daniel Mortimer has decided to stay with the Eels and not sign up with the Bulldogs.

September 18th 2009

The Bulldogs will play the Parramatta Eels next Friday night for a spot in this year's grand final. Parramatta beat the Gold Coast Titans and will play the Bulldogs at ANZ Stadium in Sydney. The game will be blockbuster and a huge crowd is expected to turn out. The supporters will be mostly separated for this game, with blue and gold one end and blue and white the other.
The other final is between the Melbourne Storm and the Brisbane Broncos- to be played in Melbourne at Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

Bulldogs finished second on the ladder, would have been minor premiers if they hadn't had the two points taken from them early in the season.
