The Cantonese Language

The Cantonese language is one of the languages of China. Along with Mandarin,  it is part of the Sinitic sub-group of the family of Sino-Tibetan languages.

Characteristics of the Cantonese Language

Although the Chinese dialects use a common written form which makes written communication possible between them, they are mutually unintelligible when spoken. Because of this they are are typically referred to as distinct languages.

Cantonese is a tonal language, meaning that different tones, distinguish words that would otherwise be pronounced identically.

Over 65 million Chinese speak Cantonese.
