Captain Morgan Rum Family
It's Not Just For Pirates Anymore!
Are you like me always trying a new and different way to enjoy one of the best Rums around; Captain Morgan? No matter which one of the Morgan family you enjoy, it's always great at getting the party started or for enjoying a cocktail alone.I would love to share with you some of the knowledge and recipes that I have found very enjoyable over the years.
Interesting Tidbits About Captain Morgan
Here are some things that some of you may not know that I found very interesting:Captain Morgan is a brand of rum that was actually named after the 17th Century Caribbean privateer from Wales, Henry Morgan.
Even though the label of the bottle portrays Morgan as a "pirate", the historical Henry Morgan was offended when people referred to him as a pirate, as he considered himself to be a privateer (one whose nation paid and licensed them to attack and plunder an enemies shipping). In other words he was paid to be a pirate.
Although in 1944 The Seagram Company started producing rum under the name Captain Morgan Rum Company, it wasn't until 1984 that Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum was introduced to the United States.
There are many brands of rum, but Captain Morgan seems to be a favorite for serious rum drinkers. Captain Morgan is by volume the second largest brand of spirits in the United States, and the seventh largest world wide. In 2007, there were 7.6 million 9-liter cases sold. Most Captain Morgan Rum is sold in the United States, Canada, Great Britain, and South Africa.

- The best way to drink CM is as Henry Morgan himself would have drunk it, as Grog:
3fl oz Lemon Juice, lime Juice or a mixture of both
2fl oz water
2 teaspoons Demerara sugar
3fl oz Dark Rum
Warm water to below boiling and stir in sugar, then allow to cool.
When cold, mix remaining ingredients. Makes half a pint. Serve no more
than one quarter of a pint per person per day.
This recipe is from provisions notebook of the cook of the tea clipper Norman Court.
Although not originally served this way, ite is great served over crushed ice.
