Back Pain - A Primer

Cause and Effect

Back Pain - Cause and Effect

Millions of people suffer from back pain, and it is essential to know that a medical problem is the cause and the back pain is the result or symptom.
Stress can be a major contributor to back issues. As our bodies struggle to cope with our mind's ability to deal with stress, many people attribute their back pains with common life challenges.

Aging - Sometimes the issue centers around a degeneration of the discs that make up the spine. As people age, the discs lose their ability to provide cushion, which result in more wear and tear of the spinal area. Additional symptoms could include back spasms and muscle tightness.

Injury - New or old back injuries can result in short lived or long lasting back pain depending on the impact of the injury. Simply lifting an item incorrectly or twisting your body can result in excessive strains to the back. Depending on the severity of the injury, an injury can cause long lasting pain that may need surgical intervention.

Diseases can also incur back pain. Conditions such as spinal stenosis and certain forms of arthritis can deteriorate the spinal column causing additional stress and pain. Regular screenings and physical checkups is certainly recommended to diagnose the root cause of the issue. If you are pregnant, back pain becomes more pronounced as the baby grows to term.

Certain infections of the vertebrae and discs can also result in chronic back pain. Cancerous tumors that start elsewhere, can eventually affect other areas of the body, including the back.

Although the causes of back pain are usually physical, it is important to know that emotional stress can play a role in how severe pain is and how long it lasts. Stress can affect the body in many ways, including causing back muscles to become tense and painful.

Wikipedia

In anatomy, lumbar is an adjective that means of or pertaining to the abdominal segment of the torso, between the diaphragm and the sacrum (pelvis). The lumbar region is sometimes referred to as the lower spine. The five vertebrae in the lumbar region of the back are the largest and strongest in the movable part of the spinal column, and can be distinguished by the absence of a foramen in the transverse process, and by the absence of facets on the sides of the body. In most mammals, the lumbar region of the spine curves outward.

The actual spinal cord (medulla spinalis) terminates between vertebrae one and two of this series, called L1 and L2. The nervous tissue that extends below this point are individual strands that collectively form the cauda equina. In between each lumbar vertebra a nerve root exits, and these nerve roots come together again to form the largest single nerve in the human body, the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve runs through the back of each leg and into the feet. This is why a disorder of the low back that affects a nerve root, such as a spinal disc herniation, can cause pain that radiates along the sciatic nerve (sciatica) down into the foot.

There are several muscles in the low back that assist with rotation, flexibility and strength. These muscles are susceptible to injury, especially while lifting heavy objects, or lifting while twisting. A low back muscle strain can be extremely painful but will usually heal within a few days or weeks.

The lumbar portion of the spine bears the most body weight and also provides the most flexibility, a combination that makes it susceptible to injury and wear and tear over time. This is why low back pain is so prevalent.
