In this Lens I'll briefly discuss what online backup is and why you really do need it.

Next, I'll give a brief overview of Carbonite Online Backup Software and then we'll jump into a step-by-step tutorial on how to start your Carbonite account and install the Carbonite backup software.

In the next lens we'll take a look at the Carbonite interface and examine backup and restore features.

What Is Online Backup

A very simple explanation...

Online backup is simply the process of copying your files to remote storage on the internet for safe keeping.

Sound complicated? It's not! Here's how it works.

1. You download and install online backup software (like carbonite).
2. You tell Carbonite needs to be backed up.
3. Carbonite continuously and automatically backs up your files.
4. Sit back, relax and never have to worry about losing data again.

What Is Carbonite Online Backup?

Installing Carbonite: Part 6

Congratulations! At this point Carbonite is installed on your computer and is running. Carbonite can backup your desktop and my documents folders or you can make custom selections later.

For now just click next.

Installing Carbonite: Step 7

This window basically highlight the major features of Carbonite such as:
-Carbonite adds colored dots to each file or folder to indicate it's backup status.
-You can right click on any file to add it to your backup set or remove it from being backed up.
-Carbonite backs up your files automatically and silently in the background.
-All of your files are encrypted so only you have access to them.

Installing Carbonite: Step 8

...a special note about your first backup...if you have a lot of data you can expect to wait either a few hours or days for that first backup to complete.

After your initial backup future backups will only include new and changed files and will therefore be really fast (i'm talking minutes here).

Installing Carbonite: Step 9

Sit back and relax! Well...not just yet. We still should make custom backup selections inside of Carbonite (see my detailed overview of using Carbonite).

Installing Carbonite: Step 10

Finally, Carbonite is running in the system tray and is processing your first backup. Let your initial backup complete and then visit my next lens on using Carbonite.
