Prior Proper Planning Tips
Plan on Rain; Hope for Sunshine
Have a plan for rain if your event is outdoors. Your caricature artist and quests may need cover from inclement weather. You could rent a lawn canopy (or two), or, of course, bring the event indoors. Remember that artist bookings are not rain contingent.
Outdoor Location
If your event is outside, a protected, shady area will help guests feel more comfortable while being drawn. The shade of a tree, or a screened in porch are two possible options.
Indoor Location
If your event is indoors, locate the artist away from the music speakers so guests can speak to the artist and be heard. I always bring my own lighting, so a nearby electrical outlet is another consideration.
Avoid Paying the Artist to Wait for Guests to Arrive
For a two hour party, perhaps a birthday with small children, encourage guests to arrive on time, or even a few minutes early, so the artist can begin drawing right away. I always arrive a half hour early to set up and can begin immediately at the scheduled time.
For a longer event, you may want to schedule the artist to start a half hour or more into the event, so guests have time to arrive and relax into the setting before being drawn.
Extending Time
Guests may want the artist to extend and continue drawing. If you think you may want a third (forth, fifth?) hour, just inform the artist that you might extend the time. Check to make sure the artist has the flexibility to stay longer, and for how long. I will extend by the hour, half hour, or even in fifteen minute increments.
C.O.D.
Remember that completion of payment is due before or during the event. Don't make the artist chase you down for payment, especially while you're busy enjoying the party - that's awkward for both of you.
Dress for Success
If there is a theme, please let the artist know. I may wear a button down shirt, and a black vest for an evening party, or shorts, and a Hawaiian shirt for a luau!
Protect Your Drawing from Spills
I will put each drawing in a plastic bag, and can even hold them for guests until after they have eaten.
Many People Wish to Frame Their Drawing
Let me know ahead of time, and I will supply a mat with each drawing for an additional $40 an hour. If you prefer, I will tally the number of mats used, at $5 each.
Fair Price
I normally charge $100 an hour, with a two hour minimum. If you shop around, you will see prices from $125-$150 and up. I consider my prices to be very reasonable. I have drawn thousands and thousands of entertainment caricatures since 1987. Experience shows in the product you receive.
Multiple Artists, Performers, and Attractions
If you need multiple artists, or other types of entertainment in addition to an artist, I work through several reputable entertainment companies in the Washington D.C., Virginia, and Baltimore areas, and can offer you a solid recommendation.
Tipping
Please let the artist know if a small, discreet tip basket may be placed on the back of the easel. At times, a guest may feel inspired to give a special thank you for a drawing they particularly enjoy, but are not sure if tipping is appropriate. Holiday parties typically welcome this practice in the "spirit of giving".
Wishing health, happiness, and much laughter to you and your guests!
