I suffered from carpal tunnel and painful hand cramps as a result of many years using the computer.

The pain got so bad that I would awake at night with a tingling and numbness in my hands.

My doctor suggested was best to have carpal tunnel release surgery. This operation involves cutting the carpal ligament to make more space for the nerves and tendons in the carpal tunnel. It's usually done as day-case surgery under a local anesthetic. Was the most painful thing I ever done in my life, feeling the needle of the anesthetic going into my hands was the worse part, I was told the pain was so severe because we have so many nerves in our hands. Believe me knowing how much I suffered that day; I would rather suffer than have to do that ever again. But surgery only works temporarily to most of us, before long the numbness was back, so I suffered having the surgery done, I was left with a scar on each hand, actually the scars don't look too bad, I sure have see worse but even so was all for nothing.

So finding this book just a few years earlier would have saved me so much pain and hassle.

I have had carpal tunnel too and find exercises helpful. I also find lowering the sodium in my diet helps as this reduces water retention and swelling in the hands, which for me increases the blood flow and stops my wrists being so painful.

Nice Lens! Lots of good information. It sounds very painful. I'm thankful I don't have any problems with my wrist.
  • JaguarJulie Jan 22, 2010 @ 8:17 am | delete
Oh dear! I know I contemplated needing this a few years ago -- but worked through my issues. Funny that today I am scheduled for a 2-part MRI on my hand and wrist which was injured when the car trunk slammed on it last month. It is no laughing matter when we are talking about one's writing hand.
  • MiaBellezza Jan 22, 2010 @ 7:29 am | delete
I've never been diagnosed with carpal tunnel, but when my right wrist started getting sore from computer use, I went out and bought a carpal tunnel hand sleeve / glove and have been wearing it for 7 years. BTW it's time for a new one. Funny thing is though, last spring when shoveling in the garden I managed to sprain my left wrist and it is still giving me problems at times.

I used to have trouble with RSI in my hands; it turned out to be related to undiagnosed food allergies. These days, I avoid gluten and dairy, and my hands don't bother me any more. :)

When I taught aerobics I always did wrist stretches during the cool-down portion of class. Exercises really do help with prevention (and that surgical procedure doesn't look like fun.) Nice lens!

A good approach to Carpal Tunnel syndrome - I had second hand experience of this when some of my organization's staff were crippled by this problem. Doctors tried to say that it was all in the head and the organization kept on using people. So a natural cure is a great way to go. Can I suggest you break the text up a bit into different modules. Your own experience, for example, would be better highlighted in a separate module. It might be useful too, to include the Big Arrow module to point to your preferred link.
