Cat Training Basics
What you need to know about your cat
Rules to training your cat
So let's get to the point. What you must do and what you must not do. When your cat does something that you do not want it to do, you must give her an unpleased experience like spraying water in her face or shouting the word "NO" out loud. But you must not overdo it, you must never hit your cat or make it angry by anyway, this will only make things worse! Do not make your cat fear you! By doing this you cat will have an unpleasant experience and after a few times she will understand that doing what she did is going to give her that experience again.
In the same way you must reward her for doing something good, like the first time she is using the litter box or when she is using the scratching pole instead of your furniture. Rewarding her for something she just did will make it a pleasant experience for your cat and she will remember that. You can reward your cat giving her a juicy piece of meat or some of her favorite snack, giving her a good stroke and saying something like "good boy/girl".
A very important thing to remember is that you must always apply this tactic when she has just performed her actions, if you do it later she will probably not understand why she is getting punished/rewarded for.
Good luck, and remember, cats are smart animals you will see that in just 2-3 days when you will see results.
Teaching Your Cat to Come
You must start this training session at meal time; make sure there are no distractions around for your cat and find a really taste treat for your cat that she doesn't often have, like tuna, cheese, etc. You will use this as a reward. It must be something that she doesn't often have so that she may understand that this is a special occasion.
Training Steps
1. Make sure your cat is close by so that she may hear you when you call
2. Shout out the command "catname, COME". She will probably ignore you the first few times but keep trying and give her a hint of the reward. Keep the same command do not change the phrase. She will eventually learn that when she hears this phrase, there is tuna involved.
3. When your cat has learned to come to you for her treat, try the same again but move to a different location, so that she does not associate the command with the location. After that try another location.
4. Eventually your cat will be familiar with the command and she will come running to you. Because you cannot give her tune every time she comes to you, reward her with a good stroke or give her a biscuit. But you must always reward her with something. She will understand that she will be rewarded when she comes.
Training your Cat to Sit
Training steps
1. Place your cat on a table; make sure she is comfortable by petting here. Do not force her to stay on the table.
2. Show your cat the reward and give the command "catname, SIT", move the reward back and over her head. As you do that she will have sit to maintain her balance. When she sits immediately give her the reward and say "GOOD, catname".
3. Eventually your cat will associate the SIT command with the reward and she has to sit to get it.
4. When you have succeeded you will no longer need to use the table.
This trick may be easy for some cats and harder for others. Always be patient and never frustrate the cat, she must be relaxed.
Teaching your cat to lie down
Training session must be at your cat's meal time. Make sure there are no distractions. And prepare her favorite snack to use as a reward. It will help if you have taught her the sit command.Training Steps
1. As with the sit command you will need to place your cat on a table and pet her to make her feel comfortable.
2. Move your hand with the reward in front and slightly below the table, but not too close to her so that she cannot reach it. Then shout out the command "catname, DOWN".
3. Keep trying until she lies down and tries to reach for the reward, then immediately give her the reward and say "good boy/girl".
4. Eventually she will be responding to the command and will no longer need to use the table.
If you are having trouble to make her sit down you may gently help her by putting your hand on your back. Remember not to frustrate your cat, if so then you cannot succeed. Try again another time.
Training your cat to Sit Up
Training your cat to sit up may sound difficult to do, but surprisingly it is very easy! Cats sit up naturally when they are trying to reach something above them.Training Steps
1. Place your cat on a table and pet her to make her feel comfortable.
2. Show her the reward and say the command "catname, SIT UP". Move your hand with the reward over her and just a bit higher so that she cannot reach it unless she sits up.
3. When she sits up say "Good boy/girl" and give her the reward.
4. After a few sessions when she has learned this trick well you will not have to hold anything above her, she will sit up on command.
Teach you cat to handshake
Teaching you cat to handshake is not as hard as you may think it is. Cats are not stupid they are just a little stubborn that's all. You just have to use the same basic principle as dogs, command and reward.Training Steps
1. First of all you must always start the training session just before meals, so that your cat is a little bit hungry. Otherwise he might not really bother to take any notice.
2. Place a treat in your hand, preferably something that your cat really likes, show it to her and let her smell it but don't give it to her yet.
3. Now for the most important part, take the treat out of your hand and offer your hand to her but place it just above her face so that she cannot see that you are not holding anything. Your cat should instinctively will sit up and put her paw on your hand.
4. You must now reward your cat with the treat and say to her "nice boy/girl", so that she gets use to the phrase.
5. It's very important that your cat understands that she is being rewarded for what she just did.
Important Tips
1. You will probably not succeed right away so be a bit patient , it might take 2-3 days depending on your cat's personality and other thinks.
2. Try it for only 3-5 minutes at a time, you do not want to frustrate your cat and lose interest.
3. Never force your cat to do the trick, she must do it by herself. This is very important, try again later.
4. Never punish her if she is not doing what you want her to do, you will not succeed if you do so
5. The younger the cat the better, she will learn faster.
