It's said that about 63 percent of all households in the United States have pets. Sources estimate that 67 million dogs are owned in the US. Americans own closer to 85 million cats. We're definitely a nation of animal lovers.
Studies have shown that interactions with our pets can calm us to the point of bringing down our blood pressure. Pets are brought into hospitals and nursing homes, bringing joy and stimulation back into the lives of people whose days may be otherwise a bit too structured and mundane. People and animals need one another. Music is an escape, a therapy and a way of life. It may be a vocation or an avocation.
We love animals. We love music. We love music about animals, and we've even recorded songs performed by our pets. It's a big old goofy world, indeed.
Here's just a small selection of some of my favorite cat songs, singles and CDs. Download some tunes or purchase the whole CDs for yourself or for gifts. They'll be sure to make cold nights warmer and make long plane rides seem shorter. Keep alert, keep your tail up and your whiskers bushy.

When George Frederick Handel wrote "Joy to the World," which contains the immortal line "Let heaven and nature sing," he probably didn't mean it literally. But Meowy Christmas takes him at his word as Cheese Puff, Max, Sprocket, Binky, Clara, Cueball, Graymer, Twizzler, Petunia--and the occasional dog--meow and bark and let their animal nature sing 20 (count 'em 20!) holiday favorites.

Songs of the Cat was released by Highbridge Audio in 1991. It is a collection of songs and spoken-word pieces about cats, performed by Garrison Keillor and Frederica von Stade. Other than the traditional The Cat Came Back, the selections were written by Keillor; some are entirely original, and some are recognizable as parodies set to other folk music or even to classical music.
