A Simple Understanding

OK Here it is:

Global Warming is caused by Greenhouse Gases building up in excess. Yea, I know What exactly is that? We have all been hearing these terms for so long now that a lot of us don't even realize that we don't have more than rumor level info. So here goes: The most important greenhouse gases are.

  • Water vapor, which causes about 36-70% of the greenhouse effect on Earth. (Note clouds typically affect climate differently from other forms of atmospheric water.)

  • Carbon dioxide, which causes 9-26%

  • Methane, which causes 4-9%

  • Ozone, which causes 3-7%(For a complete list of greenhouse gases check wikipedia IPCC list of greenhouse gases)

The Heart of the Matter

These gases in the atmosphere prevent the loss of heat from our atmosphere. So If there is too much of them the global temperature will increase overall. And that is the heart of the issue.

The two largest causes of this gas buildup (according to EcoBridge) is:

  • The burning of fossil fuel from POWER PLANTS producing carbon dioxide. 40% OF CARBON DIOXIDE EMISSIONS.
(US emissions inventory 2004 executive summary page 10)

  • The production of carbon dioxide from burning of gasoline in the internal combustion engine of AUTOMOBILES. 33% OF CARBON DIOXIDE EMISSIONS.
(US emissions inventory 2006 page 8)

The Good News

The good news about this is that these are both problems that can be addressed, for instance in the 2000 presidential campaign Senator Joseph Lieberman said that if we could get just 3 mile per gallon increase in gas mileage from our car we will save 1 MILLION BARRELS OF OIL A DAY. Which is by the way exactly what the "Arctic National Wildlife" Refuge in Alaska would produce at its best.

So there it is as simply put as possible.
Remember: Information is power (clean and renewable)
