Caving Pictures Experience *
Ranked #1 in Sports & Recreation, #111 overall
No Caving Helmets with Lights Required Here!
Let's face it, caves can be dark and caving is a dangerous sport or recreation. Caving accidents happen quickly, so if you are planning on going caving... wear a helmet with lights, and good caving gear is essential equipment for climbing.
Caving or spelunking is the recreational sport of exploring caves. The single rope technique is used in vertical exploration of pit caves. Speleology is the scientific study of caves and cave environment.
Caves are created mostly by acid rain or just water. Bats live in caves, and creepy crawling bugs and creatures, snakes and birds. In the deepest depths nothing lives. It is cold inside of a cave and in some there is no sun light at all. There is however the formations of stalactites and stalagmites, which are very beautiful to see. Then, there are caves like the Kizil Caves, that were made into comfortable dwellings that are actual caves.

Standing In The Mouth Of A Cave Picture
Between the outer world and the under world. What did mankind do here?

There is a sense that something very bad has happened at some caves that never goes away. A cold chill that is felt by your senses that can not be explained...it's not the darkness or the temperature change. When it happened and what happened may always be unknown.
Caving experts do discovered evidence in some caves where there were human sacrifices, even cannibalism. In my caving research I have come across some ritualistic finds along these veins. However, I do not have much of a stomach for that, so I will not go into detail at this time.

Rappel Caves Pictures
Believe me, its a work out rappelling and caving is not an easy sport or recreation. Search and rescue teams are always a phone call away around open caves that anyone can go caving in. Bring a camera in a cave, take some pictures to share your experience.
Gorgeous Cave! The Vertical Rope Method.
There is no room for errors. Use the best caving equipment.

Photo: Neversink Cave by Willie Hunt
At the entrance of a cave the temperature can be 20 to 30 degrees colder than the outdoor temperature is. This tells you that once you go into a cave there is going to be a definite change in temperature that you will need to adjust to and be prepared for. A prolonged stay while caving can be dangerous because of hypothermia. When climbing into a cave for the first time, be prepared or a search and rescue team might need to be called.
Each member of your team should be well rehearsed in cave rescues and know the lesson plan well. In areas where caves are open for caving exploration, there are well trained rescue teams that are ready at a moments notice. They will have all the caving gear that is necessary. It is a good practice to always have someone that remains outside, who knows what to do in an emergency situation in case of a caving accident or other reasons. Even experienced cavers have caving accidents, they happen so fast.

Just Beautiful! - Startling and Spooky
The rock formation looks like the scene from a horror movie.

Even more amazing to me than the formations of stalactites and stalagmites in caves, is that people will destroy our nature caves out of greed, without any re-guard to the creation that has and is taking place... When people can't be trusted, they must be controlled.
I do not worship creation itself by any means, but I am brought to a stilling reverence of its formation and the laws by which they are grown. The laws of creation that are in place and govern the world that we live in are not hidden.
Cavers often find that they are asking them selves why they are doing what they do. Caving is the #1 sport and recreation for many, it is not for everyone. Cavers need to have a respect for the caves that they explore, because in a moment with one small mistake an accident can occur that can be fatal.
Stalactites are formed, and they grow.

One of the world's most beautiful caves, because of the brilliant displays of color.

When light is cast on rock formations, it is the different solid minerals that are in the formations that reflect the light and display such vibrant colors. Reflections of light! - Caving is an adventure into the depths of the earth!
Sassi di Matera Caves
Prehistoric cave dwellings in the Italian city of Matera, Basilicata.
Sassi di Matera: The Sassi are houses dug into the tufa rock itself, which is characteristic of Basilicata and Puglia. Many of these "houses" are really only caverns, and the streets in some parts of the Sassi often are located on the rooftops of other houses. The houses are designed of rock.

Broken Stalactites
Pictured: Broken Formations that People have Destroyed and Taken.
Stalactites and stalagmites are considered to be growing formations. When touring a cave you might be asked not to touch the rock formations, because the oils and dirt from peoples hands can disturb the mineral water from clinging to the formation, even staining the color permanently. The formations are created by minerals and water that solidify on the rock surface.Stalagmites can also be grown in lava tubes, although the mechanism of formation is different. Stalactites and stalagmites can also form on concrete ceilings and floors. They form much more rapidly there than in the natural cave environment.

Quick Response in a Caving Accident Can Save a Life!
Cave rescues are slow, deliberate operations that require both a high level of organized teamwork and good communications. The extremes of the cave environment (air temperature, water, vertical depth) dictate every aspect of a cave rescue. Therefore the rescuers must adapt skills and techniques that are as dynamic as the environment they must operate in. The outcome isn't always the best!

- These photos of caves are absolutely gorgeous and even inviting. However, I doubt with my claustrophobia I will ever take to caving. The Neversink Cave photo is my favorite. I lived in Cave City, Kentucky for several years, visited Mammoth Cave National Park, but never the cave itself. You have my blessings and a bit o' sunshine for this stellar lens.

- This is a cool lens, another fabulous creation by Susie. Ya know, I tramped the woods since I was like 5 or 6, spent hours every day during the summer hiking North Idhao with my dog and never once did I find an awesome cave. A couple very small ones that could be used for shelter but nothing spectacular and as I got older I guess I was to dumb to think of locating some I could travel to and check out. I obviously missed some memories. Again, this is a great lens! It deserved a Purple Star! Great Job :-)

- Wow, this is truly one of the most picturesque lenses I've seen. Caving can be very dangerous, indeed . . something that needs to be done in groups with an expert leader (imho). I read about a man who crawled into caves that narrowed (really a different thing - tunnel crawling). But he became stuck after his rib cage passed through a narrowed part and subsequently died. Even some areas of tunnels can 'cave-in' unexpectedly (due to shifts in the earth's tectonic plates). I'd go in with a hard hat and an expert guide leader, for sure. Fantastic lens!

- Rose, I would not want to be in a cave during an earthquake. You just made me think about an experience a friend of mine had that I should share on here. Thanks so much for visiting, glad you enjoyed the caving pictures, and thanks you for the Google+. <3
