Points to Consider Before Building
You want to consider who this table is for? Is it for yourself, for your wife to do crafts on or for the whole family. Is one big table going to suit your purposes or would building the kids their own table be a better idea? How often do you want to move your table? Is it going to be under a shady tree or on your deck? These are all points you want to think about before starting to build your Cedar table. Remember if it is on your lawn then you will need a table that you can easily move every time you mow the lawn. Possibly building your table directly on top of patio stones might be a good choice, do you really want to move the table every weekend? If the table is going to be a permanent fixture on your deck then you could add bench seating to one side of your deck railing. Last thing to consider is the shape round, rectangle, square or an octagon. Above all you want your table to be safe, you don't want your family sitting on something rickety. Planning ahead will save you time, money and frustration. Types of Wood
There are many species of wood that you can use to build your table. Cedar is a very popular choice, it lasts for decades and is good in resisting rot, it can be left untreated or stained to maintain its natural color, and of course new cedar has a wonderful aroma to it. You can also use pressure treated wood, which is normally less expensive than Cedar but discolors quickly unless treated with a water repellent product. You can stain or even paint pressure treated wood in any color you choose, which can be a great decorating plus! So think abut how long you want your table to last and how much money you want to invest into it. Maybe take a quick run down to your local lumber yard and see what specials they have on wood.
Choosing Your Plans
Let us first discuss why it is important to have a plan even for a project as simple as a cedar table. There are probably many handy do-it-yourself enthusiasts out there who have created a cedar table without a plan, but you have to understand though that not everyone has the aptitude for building backyard furniture. The best table plans should include a detailed list of the materials required in order to finish this kind of project. A step by step guide with diagrams is the easiest type to follow. The blueprints should assume the user is a novice and provide instructions accordingly. For value for money I love plans that provide many design options. There are so many styles of tables out there you want to have options to choose from. Hey, you may even end up building more than one table!
