Celtic cross tattoo designs - what are they?
The celtic cross originates from the celtic tribes from the countries Ireland, Wales, Scotland and parts of England. Its apperance is similar to that of a christian or latin cross, the major difference is that there is a circle where the three prongs of the cross interconnect near the top. It is also often interweaved with a pattern of roots which makes for a very complex and interesting design. This is one of the main reasons its such a good idea for a tattoo. There is much speculation behind the meaning of the cross itself. One theory suggests that it was a symbol for the four corners of the earth. Another theory is that the horizontal and verticle sections were a representation of the sun and the circle on top was for the moon.
The most accepted idea behind the origins of the celtic cross is one of a religious nature. Irish catholics determine that the cross was used by celts when they converted to christianity and that the circle above was a symbol for eternity, meaning gods love for them was endless.
There is also an Irish legend which tells how St. Patrick created the first Celtic cross by drawing a circle over a Latin cross to incorporate a pagan moon goddess symbol.
Today the modern use for the celtic cross can mean a lot of different things to people. It is often said that is a symbol of protection, of love, and a representation of a persons heritage.
Despite the ambiguity of its origins, there is no denying that it is a symbol that has a firm and historic background. There are many still standing ancient structures in parts of the united kingdom where you can marvel at and appreciate the design of the celtic cross.
