What Is Advent and an Advent Wreath?

Irish families try to keep many of the Christian holiday traditions alive and one of the ways they do that is to use an Advent Wreath during the Christmas season.  A Celtic Advent Wreath is designed to incorporate some of the symbols that signify the Irish heritage especially the Celtic Cross and Celtic Knot.

For Roman Catholics and many Protestants: Advent is the time period covering the four Sundays before Christmas (and the days in-between them). The beginning of Western Advent can therefore fall any time between November 27th and December 3rd.

Celtic Advent is always Nov. 15-Dec. 24 (Observance begins at Sunset on Nov. 14).  The Dates are the same for Eastern Orthodox Advent (Nativity Fast).

 It is a season in the Christian church that is full of color, spirit and anticipation.  Advent has historically been a time for reflection and prayer and marks the beginning of the Church year.

From its origin in the 4th century and on, it was also a time of fasting.  The fasting portion was first dropped by the Protestant Churches, and then by the Roman Catholic Church, but is still observed in the Eastern Orthodox Communions.

The beginning of Advent is a time for the hanging of the green, decoration of the church and homes with evergreen wreaths, boughs, or trees that help to symbolize the new and everlasting life brought through Jesus the Christ.  An Advent wreath may be made from nature's greenery or it can be commercially made.

It is a circular wreath (real or artificial or metal or homemade) with five candles, four around the wreath and one in the center. The wreath is used in special prayer rituals  to tell or teach the Christmas story during the Advent season.

The word Advent means "the coming" or "the arrival."  The focus of the entire season is the celebration of the birth of Jesus the Christ in his First Advent, and the anticipation of the return of Christ the King in his Second Advent. Advent coincides with the Christmas holiday season.

The Celtic Cross on The Advent Wreath

A little bit of history .... The shape of the celtic cross and Irish cross is a symbol of modern Christianity but it had been widely used by many ancient peoples, long before the arrival of Christianity. Its four arms were perfect for denoting the four elements, the four directions of the compass, and the four parts of man - mind, body, soul and heart. The addition of the ring around the cross has had many explanations, everything from sun worship and symbolism, to creating a shape with the cross that was well contained and aesthetically pleasing.

Popular Irish legend says that the Celtic Christian cross was introduced by Saint Patrick during his time converting the pagan Irish by drawing a circle over a Latin cross to create a pagan moon goddess or the sun symbol. For an Irish Catholic, the circle in the Celtic cross may be a symbol of eternity and the endlessness of God's love. It can even represent a halo emanating from Christ.

In the early 7th century in the Celtic regions of Ireland, many free-standing upright crosses also called 'high crosses' were erected by Irish monks and some bear inscriptions in runes. The runic alphabets are a set of related alphabets using letters known as runes to write various Germanic languages prior to the adoption of the Latin alphabet. The Celtic cross is often made of stone. After the 15th century, ringed high crosses ceased to be created in the Celtic lands, other than a few obscure examples.The Celtic Revival of the mid-19th century led to an increased use and creation of Celtic crosses in Ireland. In 1853 casts of several historical high crosses were exhibited to interested crowds at the Dublin Industrial Exhibition. In 1857, Henry O'Neill published Illustrations of the Most Interesting of the Sculptured Crosses of Ancient Ireland. These two events stimulated interest in the Christian and non-Christian Celtic crosses as a symbol for a renewed sense of heritage within Ireland.

New versions of the high cross were designed as fashionable cemetery monuments in Victorian Dublin in the 1860s. From Dublin the revival spread to the rest of the country and beyond. Since the Celtic Revival, the ringed cross became an emblem of Celtic identity, in addition to its more traditional religious symbolism. Alexander and Euphemia Ritchie, working on the Isle of Iona in Scotland from 1899 to 1940, popularized use of the Celtic Cross in jewelery.

Since its revival in the 1850s, the Celtic cross has been used extensively as grave markers. This was a departure from medieval and Celtic revival times, when the symbol was more typically used for a public monument. The Celtic cross now appears in jewelry, T-shirts, tattoos, coffee cups and other retail items.

Crafted of wood and painted in a nighttime sky color scheme, the handsome piece features 24 doors around an empty manger. The magnetic character behind each door may be placed in the center to help fill out the scene as the days lead up to Christmas. The Advent Calendar

There are secular as well as religious Advent Calendars. Most have 24 doors to open or 24 pockets to fill or 24 pictures to stick on , one of which is opened or filled each day from the first day of December until Christmas Eve. The little "window" may show something to do with the Nativity Story and birth of Jesus, or just something Christmas-related: holly, bells, etc...

It is a nice family tradition especially for children as it helps with the month-long "countdown" to Christmas and the celebration of our Lord's birth, which is what much of the Advent Season itself has become for today's Christians.

History:

As far back as the early 1800's, German families might do the "countdown" of the Advent Season by marking a door or wall daily with a chalk line, or light 24 candles, one more each day. Some families would also hang 24 little religious pictures on a wall.

Use of today's Advent Calendars is of fairly recent practice, appearing first in a Protestant area of Germany around 1851, with the first known hand-made Advent Calendar, but being almost immediately adopted by Roman Catholics, also.

Other types are ones with chocolates (first seen in 1958), or larger Christmas tree boards with 24 little presents hanging on them, one to be opened each day. In Scandinavian countries, entire buildings are sometimes used as "Advent Calendars", with a different actual lighted window showing something each evening.

The first printed Advent Calendar is said to have been published by a Swabian (German), Gerhard Lang in 1908. It is certain that he published the first one with little windows/doors that opened, in the early part of the 20th century.

God Is in the Manger: Reflections on Advent and Christmas

CHECK OUT THIS 5 Star Review!

***** 5 out of 5 stars Great Advent and Christmas Devotional, January 24, 2011

This review is from: God Is in the Manger: Reflections on Advent and Christmas (Paperback)

GOD IS IN THE MANGER: REFLECTIONS ON ADVENT AND CHRISTMAS by DIETRICH BONHOEFFER

I realize this is January but I wanted to let you know about a book I read during Advent and Christmas. I have been looking for a good Advent book for a long time and I have found it.

This little book is divided into 5 parts:
* Advent Week One--Waiting
* Advent Week Two-- Mystery
* Advent Week Three--Redemption
* Advent Week Four-- Incarnation
* The Twelve Days of Christmas and Epiphany

Reading devotional literature by Dietrich Bonhoeffer can be challenging. But God is in the Manger opens up the gospel and will take you to the heart of the Christmas story.

Most of these devotions are taken from writings during the time Bonhoeffer was being held in a Nazi prison cell. Also included with each day's reading are short excerpt from Bonhoeffer's letters and passages from his Christmas sermons.

I plan to read this again before Advent 2011. We need to be reminded about the real reason for Christmas--Christ.

Long time ago, a young woman named Mary and her husband, Joseph, had to travel from their little village to a town called Bethlehem to be counted in a census. Mary, pregnant, rode a donkey led by Joseph as they made the long journey to the city. When they arrived it was late and getting dark. Joseph knocked on door after door trying to find a place for them to stay, yet there were no rooms available. He saw a light at a small inn at the end of a narrow street and decided to ask there. The innkeeper, like all the others, informed there was no room available. The innkeeper's wife, noticed the young Mary, pregnant with child, and compassion filled her heart. She suggested they stay in the manger. There she provided Mary and Joseph with water, blankets and lanterns. The light filled the manger with a warm glow and Mary awaited the birth of her child. Late during the night, when the city was asleep, a baby's cry was heard from the manger in back of the inn. Mary gave birth to her son, Jesus, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes and placed him in the little wooden crib. Joseph and Mary spent the next hours gazing in loving wonder at the beautiful child, asleep in his cradle. The donkey, sensing something special was taking place, came closer and gazed down at the sleeping baby. In the deep night sky, a bright star hovered, casting its rays like a protective mantel over the manger. Nearby in the fields, shepherds were sung awake by a chorus of angels...and the heavens rejoiced.
