"Arguably Ireland's biggest name in traditional music"

The description above is what you'll see if you do a Google search for Altan's website. The group had its beginnings with fiddler and singer Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh from Gweedore in the far north and west of Ireland, and Frankie Kennedy, flute player from Belfast. Kennedy would travel to Gweedore in the 1970s to learn the Irish language and play music. He met Mairéad there and they began making music together. They were married in 1981 and released their album Ceol Anduaidh (Music of the North) in 1983. They were joined by Ciaran Curran and Mark Kelly on their second album, named Altan after a deep lake in Mairéad's home district. Altan became the group's name with the third album, Horse with a Heart.

Three more albums followed before Frankie, who was diagnosed with cancer in 1992, died in 1994. The title track of 1993's Island Angel was written by Mairéad for Frankie. Encouraged by Frankie, the group remained together and has released five more albums of new material along with several compilations.

Altan live in GweedoreAltan began with the duo of flute player Frankie Kennedy from Belfast, and fiddler and singer Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh from Gaoth Dobhair (Gweedore) in Donegal. Their first album got a little help on one track from Eithne Ni Bhraonain, better known as Enya. While their second album was called Altan, it wasn't until the third album that the band took the name. Frankie died of cancer in 1993, but he insisted that the rest of the band continue after his passing. After a few years Altan was back with new music.

Words on a web page or lens, CD covers, track listings - all these can't quite express what Altan is all about in the way that seeing and hearing them perform can.

Oh, please update! They've done so much...

I was glad I got to meet Frankie in the summer of 1992; I miss seeing Mairead; I used to make the annual trek to watch them play here in the Atlanta area, but times have been too hard for awhile. She's one of my greatest influences in Gaelic singing. Altan is one of my favorite bands
