About the Central Park Conservatory
The Central Park Conservatory is a not-for-profit organization, has 25 million visitors each year, is the most frequently visited urban park in the United States, and protects over 150 acres of lakes and streams from pollution, silation, and algae. Read more: About the Central Park Conservatory.
The Conservatory was founded in 1980 in the hope to restore the park to its former splendor. Being that I am a New Yorker, I remember the park in the 70s as a teenager, when the Great Lawn was referred to as the "great dustbowl" and the Harlem Meer was polluted with garbage and debris. One could describe it as a "filthy mess." The ducks were gone and I believe there was no fishing allowed. The great renovation that went on changed all that now there's water play in the park, more picnics more weddings, more to do and see.
In addition there are the outdoor summer events such as the Shakespearean plays, various walk events, you can partcipate in the Central Park Conservancy for Catch & Release Fishing at the Harlem Meer and visit Serene Pleasure: the Conservatory Garden and more. See Events in Central Park. Here's a new addition that I got from a friend off Facebook--the Delacorte Theater
