Diversify Your Personal Training Job into a Big Business
Often time's personal trainers are always concerned with finding the next few clients to fill their day. This focus is understandable for this is the bread and butter for most personal trainers. But have you thought about diversifying your line of products or services?
Why is it important to diversify your personal training job
If you have been working in the field as a personal trainer for a few years now, you might be like others who I've spoken to and feel as though there has to be something more. You probably love your job but are not stoked on the number of hours, and the messy schedule it demands from you on a weekly basis. The only way out of this situation is to first realize that you need to change what you are currently doing. Sound familiar? To get different results you must change what you are doing. I'm sure you have repeated similar words to your clients at some point.
If you are happy with the hours you work and the busy schedule you may have, then you may not be interested in what I have to say. But if you are looking for some way to have a steady stream of income during those days when things are "quite", then read on. As a personal trainer you are viewed as a health professional so diversifying your offering is an added value to your customer. You can build multiple streams of income which will round out those times that you are slow, or to take time off to go on a vacation.
What has your business cost you?
Ideas for diversifying your Personal Training Business
One of the ways you can diversify your business is to write a column in your local paper. Give them a call and ask if they are open to having a health and wellness column written by a certified personal trainer on a weekly basis. You can write on a number of different topics from exercises for core strength or activities to get out of the house. The possibilities are endless and you will get great exposure to the local market. Always make sure you have your contact visible and let them know what your profession is.Another great way to diversify your personal training business is to sell complementary products or services. Being a health mentor you have great power in what you recommend to your clients. A word of caution, make sure you are connecting with reputable partners. You want to make sure you can trust the company or business partner you are dealing with for if your customer is not happy with them, you will find yourself guilty by association. There are many great partners that you can work with to build a Big Business.
Some possible services that you can connect your customers with:
- Pilate's
- Various fitness groups
- Yoga
- Nutritionist or Dietitian
For most of these you could take a course and integrate them into your practice. Another option is to create a referral program with people in the respective fields already. A "finder's fee" of 10-15% is typical in the industry. Make sure you have this layout beforehand so there are no surprises down the road. Another path which has proven to be straight forward and effective is to connect your customers with products that are going to benefit their health.
Some products that you can connect your customer with are:
- Workout videos (you can create this yourself)
- Nutritional shakes
- Nutritional supplements
- Low Glycemic Cleanses
Again being careful to associate yourself with the right partner or company that you can trust is paramount and worth doing a bit of extra research. Many personal trainers have found great success when expanding their health promotion. There are ways to present this to you clients and not feeling that you are now just 'selling them' on different things. The idea here is to improve the overall health experience of your customer so they are happy to come back with a new referral for that wonderful 'x' you shared with them. This is the only way to get out of working every day of your life until you retire.
I have taken the first steps and have put together a program to help personal trainers evaluate different partners in the industry. The key is to find the right fit for you and to know you can trust the added product/ service you are working with. You do not need to be an expert in the different fields, simply get connected to the right group.

- This is a perennial challenge for all of us, trainers. This is where creativity also is put to a test. Resourcefulness. Clients these days want trainers who can reinvent themselves. Or at least, make each training day with them a break from all the monotony out there.

- Hi there Casey,
Thanks for spending time and sharing what you have learned. I'm on day 4 of your bootcamp and have learned quite a bit. I appreciate the way you give 'practical' advice that I can put into use.
When I was going through school they made it seem as though clients would be knoking at our door. I didn't realize that I would be in business for myself.
Looking forward to finishing the bootcamp and seeing the difference in my business.
Thanks again,
