Charlie's Angels TV Series 1976 - 1981

The year is 1976.

America is still battered and bruised after the shocks of the military withdrawal from Vietnam and the political trauma of Watergate - about to elect a new president, the formerly, virtually-unknown Georgia governor, Jimmy Carter.

The hit-parade is registering the new sounds of Disco, like Donna Summer's Love To Love You Baby and calmed by the radio-friendly stadium-rock like Peter Frampton's Show Me The Way and Fleetwood Mac's Rhiannon

Guys are wearing flared jeans & t-shirts, often with Jesus hair and a beard
Girls are wearing chokers, peasant clothes and platform shoes

And Feminism is about to enter American popular culture via the back door, through the overnight sensation of TV's Charlie's Angels!

Created by long-time comedy writers Ivan Goff & Ben Roberts, nurtured by legendary television executive producer Aaron Spelling, Charlie's Angels is the weekly story of three modern, foxy, chic private investigators, who aren't just as good as any man, they are better!

Charlie's Angels Season 1

The Original Charlie's Angels

A brief recap;

Charlie's Angels - the show was originally titled Alley Cats but Kate Jackson suggested the name-change - are three former female police officers who leave the Force and take employment as private investigators for the mysterious, never-seen millionaire, Charles Charlie Townsend voiced by veteran actor John Forsythe. Folks come to Charlie with their problems and he gets the Angels to solve them. The facilitator (and occasional side-kick) for this curious employment arrangement is Townsend's employee, Bosley (David Doyle).

And so, to the show. If there's one DVD that almost all fans will have to have, it's this one with the three original Angels, Kelly, Jill & Sabrina, in the series that changed television forever.

Amazon's Charlie's Angels Season 1 Gallery

For me, the stand-out episodes are:

  1. Angels In Chains - the Angels go undercover in prison by deliberately getting incarcerated, only to discover an extortion-prostitution scheme run by crooked cops
  2. Consenting Adults - Jill as a hooker who's pretty good on a skateboard!
  3. The Seance - a hypnotized Kelly is told to murder Jill &
  4. Angels On Wheels - Jill joins a roller derby team to investigate the unexplained death of a skater
And then, at the end of Series 1, Farrah was gone!

Charlie's Angels - The Complete First Season

23 episodes

Guest stars in the first Charlie's Angels series include the mid-1970s Tommy Lee Jones, Kim Basinger, Tom Selleck and a host of TV character actors and soon-to-be minor TV stars of the 1980s.

Extras include the original ABC-TV made-for-TV movie pilot + Angels Forever, a fans-reminiscing featurette.

"Fans of 1970s TV won't want to miss this great DVD...Critics may have dismissed this [at the time] as a 'jiggle show' but it was one of the first to show strong female characters in an era when women were largely fluff on television. Angels Forever!"
Top 500 Amazon reviewer Fruit Loop

"Charlie's Angels takes you back to the highest form of glamor and glitz that existed in the 1970's - the good, the bad & the absurd. The Angels are beautiful, the automobiles are enormous, the decor is hideous, the hair-styles are gigantic and the clothing...WHAT IN THE WORLD WERE THEY THINKING?"
Amazon reviewer Matt P. Swintek

"Farrah Fawcett maybe the breakthrough star of the show and the lovely Kate Jackson may be the most assertive angel but Jaclyn Smith is such a pleasure to watch - she's gorgeous, sophisticated and sexy - all in one"
Amazon reviewer aldo68

The Iconic Farrah Fawcett Poster

Farah Fawcett Pin-up PosterWhile there are a number of factors commonly cited for Farrah leaving the Angels - in particular, the jealousy of her then-husband, Lee Majors, TV's The $6 Million Man - which may or may not be true.

However, I believe that the biggest reason would have to have been the ramifications of the massive media exposure that she gained from the success of this still well-known poster.

"In 1976, Pro Arts Inc., pitched the idea of a poster of Fawcett to her agent, and a photo shoot was arranged with photographer Bruce McBroom, who was hired by the poster company.

From 40 rolls of film, Farrah herself selected her six favorite pictures, eventually narrowing her choice to the one that made her famous. The resulting poster, of Farrah in a one-piece red bathing suit, was a best-seller; sales estimates ranged from over 5 million...to as high as 12 million copies.

Fawcett, generally acknowledged as a shrewd businesswoman, retained ownership of the image and made millions of dollars on sales of the poster."
wikipedia

Put simply, the poster made Farrah bigger than Charlie's Angels!

Charlie's Angels: Season 2

24 episodes - 2 are double episodes edited together

And so, to season 2, with or without Farrah! Her character, Jill, leaves the agency to become a racing car driver and her replacement is - her sister, Kris Monroe (also a police woman), played by Cheryl Ladd.

Given the dramatic nature of Farrah's departure, Ladd had big shoes to fill but after a tentative start, blossomed to become accepted and then well-loved by the Charlie's Angels audience.

As I see it, in Series 1, Jill was portrayed as being "sexy", while in this Series 2, Katy - who, I believe to be certainly better looking - was portrayed as "cute and bubbly", the ultimate girl-next-door. Interestingly, not having a focus for the "sexy" Angel enabled the group to become more integrated and generally "sexy".

It's sometimes hard for the public to grasp that in a show like Charlie's Angels - which had 24 episodes in Series 1 - it's difficult to significantly change structural elements once a production has started. This is because there are so many production variables and so little time between episodes - indeed, several shows are often shot concurrently and out of sequence - that to a change can become a logistics nightmare.

Thus, the success of Charlie's Angel's Series 1 can't really be measured by that initial series but more by the improved production values of Series 2. The second series had considerably better scripts and with the inclusion of Cheryl Ladd / Kris, even the confidence to occasionally deviate from the TV-cop / thriller genre, becoming, at times, comedic.

Some of the stand-out episodes are:

  1. Pretty Angels All In A Row - is a fantastic piece of satire, in which the Angels enter a beauty contest - the Miss Chrysanthemum Festival Pageant - after it appears that the contest may be being sabotaged
  2. Circus of Terror - a series of bizarre "accidents" almost pushes a circus to ruin. The Angels join to investigate what's really going on with Kelly appearing as a stunt motorcycle rider, Sabrina as a mime artist and Kris as a knife thrower's assistant
  3. Unidentified Flying Angels - finds the Angels investigating a missing member of an affluent, kooky UFO sect that hopes to meet aliens and travel to outer space. Don't miss Kelly's "chilling" impersonating an alien &
  4. Angels In The Wings - written specially with new Angel Cheryl Ladd in mind, her character Kris sings "Sweet Misery" as the Angels investigate shenanigans on the set of a movie musical

"Charlie's Angels were wonderful because they were smart, attractive, and active.
In Season 2, they play football, hang glide, ride horses, play tennis, sing, play guitar, ice skate, enter a beauty pageant [etc. proving] that they can hold their own, anywhere, anytime."

Amazon reviewer cyclista

"Even though Farrah left in the second season, Cheryl Ladd, as her sister, filled the seat [creditably]. Kate shines without the Farrah phenomenon and Jaclyn is radiant as ever!
The new trio in the second season made the show stronger and it is evident in this DVD set."

Amazon reviewer Stephen

"Season 2 of Charlie's Angels is a great collection complete with action, glamor, glitz, and light-hearted humor. It's also a bargain - you get 26 episodes at a running time of 1127 minutes - almost 19 hours of entertainment at a very low cost!"

Charlie's Angels Season 3

22 episodes

There was every reason that the ABC Network would believe that Charlie's Angels Season 3 would continue it's magical success. Season 2 had been almost as big a success as Season 1, the loss of Farrah Fawcett had resulted in only a minuscule slide in the program's ratings and - as part of the dropping of Executive Producer, Aaron Spelling's, lawsuit against her - she was due to return in 3 guest spots (and 3 more in Season 4).

However, the Angels' success brought a problem that couldn't be solved. Kate Jackson was offered a role in the (eventually 5 Academy Award-winning) movie, Kramer -v- Kramer and Spelling, still smarting from the Farrah Fawcett debacle would not give her time away from the series. This caused all sorts of tensions and resulted in Jackson leaving the Angels at the end of the series.

With that as the emotional backdrop, Season 3 takes on a new resonance. It certainly takes off where Season 2 ended and there are genuine high points with consistently good production values but there are two problems:

  1. the scripts are erratic - ranging from very good - on occasions, their best - to the predictable (a situation which I cannot really understand) &
  2. Kate Jackson does, at times, seem distracted

Amazon's Charlie's Angels Season 3 Gallery

Some of the stand-out episodes are:

  1. Angels In Vegas - the 2-part season opener shot on location in Vegas. Two employees of the Tropicana Hotel have died in unusual circumstances and the Angels are called in to find out what's going on
  2. Angels Come Home - Jill returns!
  3. Haunted Angels - A phony psychic is manipulating an old woman into thinking he can contact her nephew, who had died years before &
  4. Angel On My Mind Witnessing a murder / robbery, Kris hits her head and gets Amnesia but the murderer knows who she is and intends to get rid of her, too. Can the other Angels find her in time?

"I loved Charlie's Angels!...It's great to have Season 3 in all its campy glory. Kris wrestling alligators, Mercedes McCambridge at a fat farm with lesbian overtones, a Dean Martin romance, Anne Francis as a religious cult groupie kidnapping cheerleaders and a marathon with T&A and a boa constrictor!"

Charlie's Angels cast - Season 4

With Kate Jackson's departure, Season 4 heralded another new Angel, the stylish and graceful Tiffany Welles (another beautiful, former police woman, whose father was a friend of Charlie's). She was played by the equally elegant and refined Shelley Hack, who had, that year, been the face for Charlie perfume's TV ads.

The Angels never looked more gorgeous - gowns are IN, swimsuits are OUT - but one noticeable development was that some episodes centered on individual Angels rather than the team. This development may have backfired, being too ambitious, given the Angels' enthusiastic but limited acting skills.

Season 4 did bring a discernible improvement in both the quality of the the script-writing and change in the substance that the scripts addressed, looking at darker social issues, such as drug addiction and child abuse. However, combined with Hack's introduction, these changes were probably, in hindsight, too much for the American public (whose mood for seriousness can be judged by their enthusiasm for the feelgood simplicity of Ronald Reagan, the soon-to-be-elected U.S. president) and over Series 4, ratings started to slide.

Many blame that on Shelley Hack but I think that the series had just run its course...

Amazon's Charlie's Angels Season 4 Gallery

...although some of the episodes were still very good with my standouts being:

  1. Angels On The Street - The Angels as streetwalkers!
  2. Angel Hunt - Creepy as heck! The Angels are lured to a deserted island by a madman hunter who is prepared to kill them, one at a time unless Charlie offers himself as prey
  3. Three For The Money - The Angels take on a very smart con man &
  4. Toni's Boys - A funny role reversal in which Charlie's "friend" Toni is assigned by him to protect the Angels from a murderous lunatic. Toni's "Boys" are - male versions of the Angels - ooh la la!

I was pleasantly surprised with the story lines, the humor in the scripts, the brightness of the sets, [the] places the Angels investigate and the diversity of the cases the Angels had to solve."
Amazon reviewer kay

"I recommend this set if you already own the previous three...Is it Award-winning Emmy-worthy TV? Not at all but it IS definitely an entertaining time capsule of the end of the disco era when satin hot pants, feathered hairdos and big luxury cars ruled."

Charlie's Angels Movie

Firstly, the similarities to the Charlie's Angels TV series:

  1. Charlie (the voice of John Forsythe - as in the original TV show) is there - a millionaire / billionaire who's never seen but bankrolls the Angels to do "good"
  2. Bosley (Bill Murray) is there, the intermediary between Charlie and the Angels
  3. The Angels are there - 3 crime-fighting vixens (Natalie Cook (Cameron Diaz), Dylan Sanders (Drew Barrymore) & Alex Munday (Lucy Liu) who are afraid of no man - or men
...and that's about it!

Yes, the movie version of Charlie's Angels is not much like the TV series at all - and if that's what you're expecting, let me warn you, you WILL be disappointed.

No, this is a whole, different ball game! It's a rich gumbo, a cartoon-like introduction to the new century, that's layered with numerous Pop Culture references, delivered as one giant MTV Action-Adventure-musical, that's brimming with life, joie-de-vivre and chutzpah. Sure, it's about as deep as an ant's thimble (if there was such a thing!) but who cares?

The Charlie's Angel movie is a post-Feminist, adrenalin-pimpin', hog-wrestlin' hoedown! It's fun, fun, fun - and about as good as Escapism got before America (and the rest of the Western world) got dragged into the deadly seriousness of what is now, the apocalyptic, post-9/11 era.

Plot?

Why bother explaining anything so trivial?

Instead, understand that the Kung-fu fight scenes are amazing - athletic, gender-defying, outrageous and lovingly borrowed from Hong Kong movies, made on a fraction of Charlie's Angels' $100 million budget. Incidentally, the stunt co-ordinator was Yuen Woo Ping who also did The Matrix - and trained the girls extensively in the use of wires suspension fighting techniques.

What Did You Think Of The Charlie's Angels Movie?

The Charlie's Angels Movie Review Guestbook

The first movie I liked a lot. The second movie, less so.

Full Throttle Movie

I'm not the world's biggest fan of Corporate America, in particular, its fast food Lords, whose rapacious acquisition of lands now reaches to almost every corner of the globe (see: Is Fast Food Killing You Slowly?) and yet, I would be the first to admit that perhaps 3 or 4 times a year, I l-o-v-e a Burger King Whopper with fries - hold the soda.

I'm not ashamed of doing so, nor do I feel I need to defend myself - it's just part of living in an urban culture. I kinda see the first Charlie's Angels movie in that light - a gleeful indulgence that was j-u-s-t right for its pre-9/11 time.

Unfortunately Full Throttle is a completely different kettle of fillet-o'-fish! Released in 2003, well into the Afghanistan war and soon after the beginning of the Iraqi conflict, the public just wasn't in the mood for a bigger, better but more dumbed-down sister of the first movie.

Dumbed down?

Hmmm. Make that intellectually challenged.

While Full Throttle didn't flop - it probably returned its $125 million budget - it didn't surf any wave of audience excitement. Still, there's plenty of fun and bad-ass mayhem in this often absurd, extended MTV music video.

The Prequel To Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle

There's actually a 6-part animated prequel to Full Throttle that provides a little bit of a back story for the opening scenes of the movie. In it, we find the Angels on the track of a globe-trotting search for a missing U.S. marshal.

The episodes were posted online - one every week - to create a buzz for the release of Full Throttle, with the final episode being posted 10 days before the movie's release.

Charlie's Angel: Full Throttle Movie Review - Part 2

So, what's new in Full Throttle?

  1. Well, Bosley (Bernie Mac) is now black! Actually, the original Bosley's has left the Agency and the new Bosley is his long-lost half-brother - in case you hadn't guessed! Hey, it's that kind of a movie.
  2. There's an extended homage to Marion / Karen Allen's drinking scene from the original Raiders Of the Lost Ark movie and several other clever Pop Culture references like The Sound Of Music
  3. The stunts are bigger, louder and somehow even less believable than the original movie
  4. The music is a pulsating melange of familiar hits, ground-breaking dance music that effortlessly slides over thirty years - which is quite a feat &
  5. Demi Moore - who, I have to admit, I have always found difficult to like - appears as an ex-Angel, Madison Lee, turned baddie with a seriously to-die-for-and-be-resurrected-only-to-gladly-die-for-again bikini body

There are some wonderful slapstick moments, like the Angels' "spontaneous" girlie-dance to M. C. Hammers' Can't Touch This (see the poster above) and the more demanding stunt of Alex driving a truck off a bridge, Natalie climbing into a helicopter mid-drop that it was carrying, starting it and picking up the other two Angels mid-air and a hostage that they've just rescued!

Nice!

Make that nice and a half!

Of course, a lot of the time, the Angels are showing their toned bodies off, spouting puerile dialogue with bad jokes that even I might be embarrassed to utter but it's all in good fun.
