A Path to Peace

The Charter for Compassion is a collaborative effort to build a peaceful, harmonious global community. Bringing the voices of people from all religions together, the Charter seeks to remind the world that while all faiths are not the same, they all share the core principle of compassion...the Golden Rule.
The Charter will change the tenor of the conversation around religion and serve as a clarion call to the world.

Hundreds of organizations around the world are already working tirelessly in the name of compassion & interfaith dialogue, so The Charter for Compassion will not be "new". Its goal is to highlight these pre-existent groups and raise awareness of their work.

The Charter aims to show that the voice of negativity and violence frequently associated with religion is the minority & that the voice of compassion is the majority. Through the participation of the grassroots, people around the world will expect more out of religious leaders & one another.
In doing so, the Charter will shift conceptions of religion for all people.

The Charter does NOT assume:
* all religions are the same
* compassion is the only thing that matters in religion
* religious people have a monopoly on compassion

The Charter DOES affirm that:
* compassion is celebrated in all major religious, spiritual & ethical traditions
* the Golden Rule is our prime duty & cannot be limited to our own political, religious or ethnic group
* therefore, in our divided world, compassion can build common ground.

Karen Armstrong, founder of Charter for Compassion

Karen Armstrong is a British author of numerous works on comparative religion, who first rose to prominence with her highly successful "A History of God." A former Catholic nun, she asserts: "All the great traditions are saying the same thing in much the same way, despite their surface differences."
All of them have in common, she says, an emphasis upon the overriding importance of compassion, as expressed by way of the Golden Rule: Do not do to others what you would not have done to you.

As the author of several books on the Muslim tradition, since the September 11, 2001 attacks, Ms. Armstrong has become in demand on the US lecture circuit.

In February 2008 Armstrong called for a council of Christian, Muslim and Jewish leaders to draw up a "Charter of Compassion," which would apply shared moral priorities to foster greater global understanding. This interfaith initiative was awarded the $100,000 TED Prize, backed by an international conference of leading figures in the fields of design, entertainment and technology.

My Personal View

I was raised in the Lutheran ELCA tradition, but stopped attending regularly as a young adult. In the years since, I called myself first atheist, then agnostic.

Throughout my life I have seen much which makes me question "Christianity". Sadly, most of the Christians I know do not follow the teachings of Christ.
I am sure the same can be said for other major world religions.

In my experience, religion (or the misuse/misunderstanding thereof) is the top cause of hatred, war, and persecution. I have never understood how anything which teaches LOVE and KINDNESS as its principle tenets can be twisted to justify the murder of others who do not profess the same beliefs.

I am a single person with a small voice, but I am doing everything I can to educate others about other religions and ways we can live in peace. The Charter for Compassion is a great idea which will hopefully move the world forward in this respect.
