5 Low Cost Ways to Decorate

Painting on a Budget

Doing a good cleaning and painting can go along way to helping you feel better about your home and how it influences you on how you see your self. A money saving way to go about this, is to first look at all the rooms you would like to paint and take an inventory of these spaces. Measure the sizes, look at the colors of furnishings in the room currently, and the general style of the space. Take all this information and head out to the local paint store and ask to look at the opps paints. These are paints that were custom mixed for a customer that for some reason, they decided not to buy the paint. The retailer cannot sell it at full price so they try to sell them off at a discount. Most of the times these mixtures are set off to the side or on a shelf out of the way. Ask to see them and then see if anything may work for you. Sometimes you might only have enough paint to do just one way. Thanks great. Now you have a decorative accent way to decorate around.

Garage Sales for Treasures

Ask the economy gets harder on many people the are having to sell some of their prized possessions. By taken them off of their hands, you are actually helping them out with their situation, and helping yourself as well. Take the inventory list that you have all readymade and looks for accent tables, bedding, pillows, or art work that might work in your home. Having your colors with you, you will be able to make a quick decision on the item before someone else sees your treasure. To get the best deals try to get out the first day at 8:00am. In most communities the first day tends to be a Thursday. If you find a great furniture item, but the finish does not work for your project, consider a fresh coat of paint or a simple refinish touch up job. Remember to keep your keys open.

Home Decor Thrift Shops

Just like garage sales, many people are trying to get rid of things to pay their bills. Thrift shops have really grown in popularity over the past couple of years. At one time, you would not find fine quality furniture at a thrift shop. Now there are whole stores dedicated to the category of home furnishings. Some of these specialty thrift shops will buy the product from you, but most will consign with the owner and gets a percentage when it sells. Go often the good stuff gets picked over fast.

Hand Me Down Decor

This is a great way to redecorate your home during a recession. Often older family members have more things than they know what to do with and would welcome giving you some things. A word of advice is to not just ask for it, but ask the person to tell you about a home furnishing that they have and tell them how much you admire it. Who knows you might get it for a birthday. The best place to find hand me down decor is a garage, attic, or shed. These are normally areas where items are being stored that do not have a home anymore. the emotional attachment is gone and the value to the owner tends to be less in their mind. If you see something, ask if you could buy it, and do something in exchange for it. Many older citizens are happy to have someone to talk to, so be kind and caring.

Affordable Online Home Decor Stores

There are many great opportunities for products today on the web. Places like craigslist, eBay, or regular web furniture stores are all great sources of products when you are trying to decorate during a recession. One word of caution. Always talk to the owner of a website before ordering products from them. many of the online furniture stores are run by computer guys who are great at technology, but really do not know much about home furnishings. Talking with them for a short time, you will discern if they are honest and straight foreword business people. That being said there are some interesting products that you can add to your home that do not cost allot, but will give you big returns decorating wise. One such product is the accent tables or accent chest. Buying one of these and adding it to the mixture of garage sale items, a freshly painted room, and a hand me down decor item can be just what the doctor ordered.
