If you are just starting out snowboarding, you'll want to either rent a snowboard from the ski shop, or buy a cheap used snowboard for sale and buy discount snowboard gear. This will save you money until you know for sure that you love to snowboard and know it will be worthwhile to upgrade to a new snowboard.
Many times you can find used snowboards for sale on eBay that have only been used a few times and are in almost new condition. Someone may have purchased a new snowboard with good intentions of using it a lot, but then school, work, college, or a relocation away from their favorite ski hill, or simply the need for cash has prompted the sale of their awesome snowboard. My Ride Machete Snowboard
This is a picture of my snowboard, a Ride Machete snowboard. I actually bought it new at the end of the winter for about 50% off when Sports Chalet was having a huge sale on snowboard deals. I bought it in combo deal with snowboard boots, bindings, and the snowboard for less than the price of just the board during the season. Since I live in Arizona, the sports stores carry this stuff in the winter, but then do great sales at the end of the season because they don't sell at all during the rest of the year.

- Alright, we're in Indiana currently, so as far as Mountains...:)
But my daughter and I have practiced quite a bit on our local sledding hill. The hill is usually empty in the later evening and we have a great time without accidentally plowing into a young sledder. We're heading that way in the Spring and will hit Havasu Falls. Looking forward to it.
