Composting is the process of decaying organic materials such as yard waste and food scraps and turning it into a moist organic fertilizer. Compost can make hard clay soil more rich and able to be worked and it can make loose sandy soils more dense and able to hold water. The easiest way to start composting is by building or buying a compost bin. Combining food scraps with lawn waste in the compost bin and rotating it every day to every other day will help to aerate the compost.

One of the specialized form of composting is worm composting called vermiculture or vermicomposting. Typically with worm composting, several trays are used to keep a shallow bed of compost for the worms to digest. Because compost works best between 135F and 160F you'll need to keep an eye on the temperature with a compost thermometer. You don't have to worry too much about warming the compost up because the activity of composting will generate it's own heat. So long as you have a good mixture of green materials (such as fruit scraps, egg shells, green grass or plant clippings) and brown materials (dried leaves, dried grass clippings) the reactions will be self sustaining. If you notice that the temperature is not high enough take not of the compost composition. If there is too much of one material (green or brown) add some of the other. You will also want to keep a moisture level of around 30-50%. You can measure the moisture of the compost by using a soil moisture meter or a compost moisture meter.
