The Future? Yes. Needs evolution? Also Yes
With less than a day's usage I think that the powerful concept of the on-line book reader is hear to stay and useful enough that I will tolerate some obvious flaws. The weight and size is fine, the screen is legible, downloads happen quickly enough.

Bug they need to fix: Mainly, it is very hard to hold it in a way that doesn't cause you to accidentally push the big buttons on the sides. I really don't know how this got through usability testing. Nonetheless, I will grin and bear it for the other benefits. Some folks might be inclined to wait for the next physicial generation. This is particularly an issue when using the keyboard. For all practical purposes you have to set it down to use the keyboard. They might consider making the buttons smaller or a bit harder to press.

Disappointments, again bearable:

Newspaper content is all text, no photos, no comics, no crossword puzzles or Soduko. While photos may be a challenge to the network, line drawings and fax-quality comics should be manageable.

No easy way to read PDFs. Many technical books are now offered in PDF format.

Hopefully, crossword puzzles could be a software add-on for those that already have bought the hardware.

Not disappointing, because they were clearly part of the deal, but I look forward to a day when there is a color screen and maybe a little bigger screen with a slide-out keyboard.

The experimental NowNow research service is nice, but I deliberately started with a political question and I found that some of the researchers are very doctrinaire for their political favorites. There should be a way to weed them out or at least somehow label their work product.

The Kindle is a game changer.
This morning I received my brand new Amazon Kindle. After opening the box I plugged in the AC adapter to charge the Kindle (takes about two hours to charge fully). While that was going on in the background, I downloaded the four books I purchased last night.

All four books transferred wirelessly to my Kindle very quickly - this is by far the best feature of the Kindle. Note: This is the first time I have purchased four books in one month.

After playing around with the settings of the Kindle, I started to do some actual reading. After all, that is why I purchased the Kindle. LOL First, I noticed that the e-Ink display is very easy to read at the standard font size of 3, which is my personal preference. Trying the larger font sizes, I found the Kindle renders the larger fonts very clearly. This is absolutely wonderful for people with vision problems. Second, I found the Next Page, Previous Page, Back buttons to be well placed and easy to use. Third, going online to the Amazon Kindle store was a breeze. It is obvious that Jeff Bezos and his team thought this out very well. Everything worked well and I decided to try buying a new book with the Kindle, instead of on my Macintosh. I purchased the following book and it worked flawlessly. Impressive!

There is one thing I do not like - the book cover that comes with the Kindle. The included book cover barely holds the Kindle properly. Apparently, this is the general consensus of many people. I will be purchasing a much better third party book cover on Amazon. It's not a deal breaker though IMO.

In short, buy the Amazon Kindle if you want to lighten the load on your bookshelves. This was one of the main reasons for me purchasing the Kindle. Since I am studying to become a secondary Social Science teacher, I have been collecting certain U.S. and World History books that are not in the Kindle format. With my university textbooks, I have absolutely no more room for physical books. Enter the Kindle... Now I can buy books in the Kindle format and save valuable space in my computer/study room.

I will be traveling to Canada in the near future to visit family and friends. While on the train I will be able to do a lot of reading without having to lug around a pile of books. For commuters and travelers, the Amazon Kindle is a much-needed device.

The Amazon Kindle is most definitely a game changer in the eBook market.

I am soooo addicted!!!!!
I am soooo addicted to my Kindle!!!!! I purchased the Kindle on a whim as I was taking a long flight in a few days and did not want to bring several books with me. I have never been so happy with a purchase in my life. I am finding the Kindle a great aid in finding new authors and genres that I would not have tried before. Being able to download a sample (which takes less then a minute, even for entire novels!!!) is a great help. I will still purchase physical books as there are times when I need the feel of a solid book but the Kindle definately is an aid to my reading "addiction".
