Welcome to Cheryls Cats - Sandy
I got my first cat and pet when I was two years old. I named her Sandy after my favorite cousin, whose name was Sandra. One of the funny things I remember about Sandy is when she ate a whole hot dog. She did that only once. Sandy was my friend and confidant; I told her everything. Sandy lived for 22 years, and my love for cats carried on.
Cindy and Dusty
When I got married, my mom couldn't part with Sandy, so I left her with my mom. My husband didn't want a cat at first, but a friend of his had a cat that had had kittens. His friend brought one into work one day and showed her to me. Her name was Cindy. She had long hair and was quite fiesty. I fell in love with her. My husband finally said yes. After about a month of both my husband and me working all day, we decided to get Cindy some daytime company. We checked out an ad in the newspaper for free kittens. The most active one was one called Dustball. We adopted her and shortened her name to Dusty.
They took some getting used to each other; at first we had to lock them in separate rooms when we went to work. Eventually they became the best of friends.
We still had both Cindy and Dusty when our daughter was born, twelve years later. Cindy passed on shortly thereafter. Dusty lived for a few more years after that and got to experience a toddler liking to grab at her tail.
Susie
For a couple of years we went petless. But by about the time our daughter was four, we decided to get another cat. It was the day after Christmas and I called out to the vets to see if they had any kittens; they did. So I took our daughter for a ride to the vets, and they brought out a tortie. They said that she should be a one pet cat, as she liked to lick her siblings ears alot and got them infected. Susie was our only cat for five years and loved to play retriever ball. Pet explosion - Susie, Sugar, Fiona, and Peter
And then there is the summer that I call the pet explosion. We went from having just one cat, Susie, to having two cats and two rabbits.Sugar was a cat that had been awaiting a home in a PetsMart store. Our daughter fell in love with her and so we adopted her.
Our daughter was also falling in love with all kinds of pets. We consented to Fiona, a female rabbit. And then we decided to get her some company, although Susie did like bathing her, we got Peter, a white boy rabbit. Then we found out that rabbits can reproduce at a rather young age, so we quickly separated them and housed them in two cages until we got Peter neutered.
Sugar didn't like the rabbits, and wouldn't be caught close enough to have her picture taken with either one of them.
Sugar - with a module to herself
Sugar was over a year old when we got her, and sitting away from the other pets was just fine with her. Squish Rabbit
The nice rabbit cage, although pretty, didn't quite provide enough room for two rabbits, even though they were dwarf rabbits. Peter didn't mind playing squish rabbit, he was the one on top.But apparently he was the one on top once too many times. He fell and died later that night. The vet said rabbits had a delicate spine and that there wasn't anything we could do.
After that, Susie and Fiona became the best of friends.
Susie and Fiona
Susie loved to bathe the rabbits and Fiona took right to it. Susie and Fiona became close friends and often layed by one another when Fiona was allowed out of her cage area.We had added a metal fence to the outside of her cage to give her more room and to allow her to hop about more. She also had supervised time out of the pen. Once when Fiona was out of her pen, she took a frantic run around the dining room floor for three laps. We later found out that she had bitten an electrical cord. Yes, rabbits definitely need supervision.
Susie lived for around twelve years and Fiona decided to pass just a few months later.
Sugar can go anywhere she pleases
Sugar enjoys the full house now, no rabbit to avoid and no top cat to compete with. She is quite content. We have also gotten gerbils over the years and Sugar enjoys watching them in their cage from time to time. She loves the porch. We have placed screens around the edge, and Sugar will go out and enjoy the outdoors whenever she can.
