What You Need to Get Your Child Started in Modeling and Acting

Models and actors are expected to cover their own expenses. If you are signed to or are freelancing with any agency, you will be expected to cover your basic costs for the tools you need to be a professional model or actor such as composite cards, test shoots, training, couriers, postage, etc. On very rare occasions, a large modeling agency may be willing to cover these initial expenses for a truly exceptional individual and then deduct them from the model's income. However, smaller agencies are not able to cover these expenses for you. There are no free rides in any worthwhile, rewarding career.
Composite Cards After you have photographs you can begin to put together your marketing tools. The first of these tools is a composite card. This is a single sheet of very heavy paper that has a headshot and your name printed on one side, and additional photos and your vital statistics on the back. This is your basic marketing tool, and therefore must be excellent quality. You give it to photographers, art directors, casting agents and others. It is your sales brochure and business card all in one, and it is hard to get anywhere in the business without it.

Portfolio Your second marketing tool is a portfolio. If a client shows interest in you, they will want to see more photos. Your portfolio contains an assortment of photos and tear sheets showing what you have done and your "look". When you're starting out you won't have any tear sheets since you haven't done any jobs yet. As you do get work, you will add tear sheets to show you have done actual jobs. You need a good clean headshot to show you and your personality. In addition, have a couple of full-length shots that show your body shape. Just as in any kind of advertising (which is what a portfolio is), you need to sell the client.

Although one photographer can shoot your initial composite, a portfolio eventually needs variety. More than one photographer should do photos for a portfolio. Most photographers develop their own style. The portfolio is your major marketing tool and can often close the deal.

Headshots The first of an actor's tools is a headshot. This is a single sheet of very heavy paper that has a headshot and your name printed on one side. Your resume with your vital statistics is attached to the back. This is your basic marketing tool, and therefore must be excellent quality. You give it to directors, casting agents and others. It is your sales brochure and business card all in one, and it is hard to get anywhere in the business without it.

Resume Your second marketing tool is the resume. A resume is what you staple (or attach with double stick tape) onto the back of your headshot when you submit it to agents and directors. A resume consists of contact information about yourself, your experience in acting, your acting training, and special skills. Although it's definitely important, a great headshot alone won't usually get you work as an actor - your 8x10 photo needs something to back it up. And that something is a solid resume. Across the board, industry representatives point out that a clear, concise, and current list of credits will more often than not prompt them to call a performer in for an interview or an audition. Make sure your resume is truthful, and that it expresses who you are and your abilities. It's okay to appear inexperienced - there are a lot of companies that are looking for more inexperienced actors. However, if you present yourself as a very experienced actor, it will be a letdown when your audition shows that you aren't.

Web Page You probably know how important the Internet has become. Like other small businesses, it has become important for a model to have a web presence. Almost all photographers and art directors have computers now and most are either online or soon will be. This gives you a large potential web audience. For photographers and art directors searching for talent, online offers speed, greater selection, 24 hour a day search possibilities, and ultimately cost savings.

Go-Sees and Auditions The ultimate marketing tool is your personal appearance and demeanor. Auditions can be in the form of the "go see", the "cattle call" or the "audition". If a photographer or casting director is interested in you, then they will want to meet you. You will be evaluated on your physical features, how you photograph, your appearance, and your professionalism. From here you get the job - or not!

Be prepared for a lot of rejection! You will go on many auditions and go-sees and only book a small percentage. If you do not get a job, it does not mean you aren't attractive or talented enough. It only means that you were not right for the job.

It is important to be able to handle the rejection that every model and actor must face. No one could meet the expectations of every possible client. Although you should always present yourself in the best possible way, it is best to go into a casting not caring whether or not you get it. That way it's a pleasant surprise if you get the job but you aren't let down if you don't get it.

Kids should never wear makeup or fancy hairdos to a go-see or audition unless specifically requested. Casting directors want kids to look like kids, not little adults. This means no party dresses or jewelry for girls or suits for boys. Well fitting jeans and a shirt or sweater are fine. Kids should wear sneakers or casual shoes; no heels for girls under 16.
