The Chichewa Language
The Chichewa language is spoken in Malawi where it served as the national language until 1968 until recently, it has served as the national language. Chicewa is of the Bantu language family.
How Many People Speak Chichewa
The Chichewa language is spoken in Malawi and in areas of Mozambique, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
In Malawi, approximately 65% of the population has a n active command of the Chichewa language.
In Mozambique, Chichewa is referred to as Chinyanja and is spoken by approximately 3.3% of the population.
In Zambia 16% of the population use Chinyanja as their first language. An additional 6 million speakers have fluent command of Chichewa are found throughout the world.
