Is the 'Chi' in Chihuahua Mexican or Chinese?

The Chihuahua is the smallest of toy dogs, and is usually less than 6 pounds, although occasionally you will see one that is more. They mainly live indoors and prefer warm climates.

Chihuahuas have two basic body types - apple headed and deer headed. The apple headed Chihuahua has an apple shaped head and a short nose where the deer shaped headed Chihuahua is elongated similar to a Doberman. The Chihuahua is the only dog born with a soft spot in their skull like a human baby. It takes about 6 months for the skull to be completely formed.

Chihuahuas come with short or long hair. They are both the same breed but people usually treat them as separate breeds. One interesting fact about the long hair Chihuahua is that they don't shed more than the short haired ones.

The Chihuahua's history is an interesting story. It is believed that the Chihuahua originated in Mexico, in the state of Chihuahua. The truth is, no one knows for sure how the Chihuahua evolved. Archeological findings show that the Chihuahua predates any other breed of dog in the Americas. It is believed that the Chihuahua was a cross between a Techichi and a Biche. The Techichi was a little dog which belonged to a primitive race of people in Mexico called Toltec. The Toltec people were conquered by the Aztec who had a little dog called the Biche. It is thought the two may have interbred to produce the Chihuahua.

Another theory about the Chihuahua's origin is that a ship from Asia stopped in Mexico. A Chinese passenger had a small dwarf dog. Could this have been the Chihuahua? Chinese are known for dwarfing plants, trees and some animals. The first record of a Chihuahua was from the coast of Chihuahua. So did the Chihuahua actually come from China? Is the 'Chi' in Chihuahua actually Chinese?

We'll probably never know the actual origin of the Chihuahua but one thing's for sure, the Chihuahua is here to stay!

The Fiesty, Ten Foot Tall Chihuahua

The Chihuahua is in the top ten of most loved dogs today. I have had two full blooded and one mixed breed Chihuahua in my life. Pepi and Mr. Magoo were full blooded, apple headed and Teddy was 1/2 Chihuahua and deer headed. They all had very different personalities, but they had one trait that was the same. They were little dogs who thought they were ten feet tall!

Chihuahua's are very feisty and fearless. Sometimes this can get them in trouble with other dogs. I watched Mr. Magoo jump in the middle of two large dogs who were in a growling stand off, and make them both back down. Each dog could have stepped on Mr. Magoo and squashed him like a bug, but Mr. Magoo's persona was that of a large dog.

Chihuahuas are great pets but you must be careful if they are around small children. They tend to be temperamental because of their small size and will bite if frightened. Chihuahuas also tend to be a one person dog and very defensive of that person. You have to work with your Chihuahua so they don't become mean and bite.

Chihuahuas are very smart and you can easily train your chihuahua . They respond well to different types of training. As with any dog you must be patient and loving.

All in all Chihuahuas are wonderful pets. They are great company and a lot of fun. There is never a dull moment when a Chihuahua is in the house.

Taking Care of Your Chihuahua

The Chihuahua is a tough little dog and at the same time they are rather finicky. Here is a few tips on taking care of your Chihuahua.

  • Since they are so small they can get hurt easily. Be careful where you step, sometimes they tend to follow close behind their owner.

  • Chihuahuas get cold easily, so you have to be sure they stay warm. Even when we feel comfortable they may be cold. Chihuahuas love warm weather. Dress them in warm clothing such as a sweater during the winter.

  • Tiny dogs have tiny stomachs so feed them small amounts several times during the day. Be sure it is nutritious dog food. Do Not feed them table scraps.

  • Ask your vet about a good vitamin for small dogs.

  • Give your Chihuahua a lot of love and attention. If you ignore them they will try to get your attention in any way they can, even by developing a bad habit such as barking or tearing something of your to pieces.

Owning a Chihuahua can be a wonderful and rewarding experience. Just give them plenty of TLC and they will give you many years of happiness.
