China's National Day Celebrates the Founding of the People's Republic of China!

On October 1st, 1949, the Chinese Communist Party, under Chairman Mao's leadership declared victory in the war against Chiang Kai Shek's Nationalists. Mao raised the flag of the newly declared People's Republic of China in front of around 300,000 soldiers and citizens in a ceremony in Tiananmen Square. In modern China, the people are just as patriotic today as in any other country.

At the National Party Plenary meeting held in May 1999, the Chinese government declared a one week holiday, as both a patriotic and economic fixture of the Autumn season. National Day holiday week is referred to as one of the "Golden Weeks" of the year. The other one is the week held to celebrate Chinese Lunar New Year.

Some of the events that were held to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of National Day included:

  • A Grand National Day Parade - A mass pageant, made up of 36 formations and six performing groups involving about 100,000 citizens took part. They were complemented by 60 floats, and a background performance involving 80,000 primary and middle school students.

  • Inspection of troops in Tiananmen Square - These state functions are held every five years and on important anniversaries. A senior Chinese military commander said recently that 2009's National Day parade in Beijing featured previously undisclosed technologies in the 108 missiles on display in the Grand National Day Parade.

  • Gala Evening Party - Held in Beijing, with similar events held all around the country. If there is one thing for certain, there was plenty of delicious food on offer from a huge variety of cuisines that are available in China.

  • Fireworks Displays - They were spectacular and lasted for hours in nearly every city all over China! The official fireworks display in Beijing was conducted at the Gala Evening Party, and lasted for 33 minutes.

The 'National Day of the Peoples Republic of China' is celebrated every year on October 1. It is a public holiday in the People's Republic of China to celebrate its national day.

The PRC was founded on October 1, 1949 with a ceremony at Tiananmen Square. The Central People's Government passed the Resolution on the National Day of the Peoples Republic of China on December 2, 1949 and declared that October 1 is the National Day.

The National Day marks the start of one of the two Golden Weeks in the PRC. However, there have been some recent controversies over whether Golden Weeks should be kept.

The National Day is celebrated throughout mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau with a variety of government-organised festivities, including fireworks and concerts. Public places, such as Tiananmen Square in Beijing, are decorated in a festive theme. Portraits of revered leaders, such as Sun Yat-sen, are publicly displayed.

When the anniversary is a multiple of five (e.g. the 50th, 55th, or 60th), large-scale official celebrations may be held, including an inspection of troops on Tiananmen Square. More notable of these events included Deng Xiaopings inspection in 1984 and Jiang Zemin's inspection in 1999 and Hu Jintao's expected inspection in 2009.

China's National Day ~ Historical Background!

Read about events leading up to the birth of modern China.

The Chinese Civil War was one of the key conflicts of the twentieth century. The Communist victory determined Chinese history for several generations, and defined international relations in East Asia during the Cold War and after. Despite its importance and scope-its battles were the largest military engagements since World War II-until now remarkably little has been known about the war, and even less about its effects on the societies that suffered through it. This major new history of the Chinese Civil War attempts to answer two central questions: Why was the war fought? What were the immediate and the lasting results of the Communists' victory?

Though the book highlights military matters, it also shows how campaigns were mounted alongside profound changes in politics, society, and culture-changes that ultimately contributed as much to the character of today's China as did the major battles. By analyzing the war as an international conflict, the author explains why so much of the present legitimacy of the Beijing government derives from its successes during the late 1940s, and reveals how the antagonism between China and the United States was born.
