Lens on Chinese Art

My main area is Islamic art and Oriental rugs but over time I have collected notes on Chinese Art. As I work I will add to this lens. Mostly I look for art that relates to other Asian Art. China today is much larger than China 200 years ago. We tend in the west to see China and the Chinese people as a monolithic group but over the years China has expanded to absorb many peoples who are not historically Chinese. We also see that at various times China opened its borders exporting art and design while at the same time absorbing people and concepts from Central Asia and Southwest Asia. Traditional Chinese dragons were absorbed into Persian art and the heavenly horses that we know as Turkmen horses had a major impact on Chinese art. With the advent of the Mongol Il-Khanid dynasty Chinese Blue and White porcelain became a staple in Persian miniatures for hundreds of years. It is these cross cultural exchanges that I enjoy looking for. I hope you enjoy my notes as well.
