Chinese New Year DIY Lantern

This is a very simple Chinese New Year red packet lantern your kids can DIY. It uses only 8 red packets or ang pows for the lantern. If you want to make your own charm decoration for the bottom of the lantern, you will need one more red packet.

You will need...

1) 8 red packets or ang pows for the lantern.
2) 1 red packet or ang pow for the decoration at the bottom of the lantern.
3) String for hanging up the lantern and the decoration.
4) A stapler.
5) Some tape.

Buy your red packets on eBay

or call them ang pows if you want.

Making the top part of the lantern

  1. Bend the red packet into half, press on the corners to make a marking on the red packet. The corners were marked with black circles in the picture. Bend the other side of the red packet to make another marking as shown in the picture.

  2. Unbend the red packet. Using the marking on the red packet, fold the red packet as shown in the picture. Do step 1 and 2 for all 8 red packets.

  3. Stapler 2 corners of 2 red packets together as shown in the picture. Make sure the picture on the red packets are upright.

  4. Stapler 4 red packets together. Before you stapler the last red packet together, tape a string inside the red packets as shown in the picture. This string is for hanging up the lantern.

  5. Pull the string to the outside of the lantern. Stapler the last red packet to "close" it.

Making the bottom decoration

If you want to decorate your lantern with a Chinese New Year charm, you may skip this section. Since I do not have a charm, I will make one here.
  1. Take one red packet, cut it into stripes as shown in the pictures. Leave some space on the top of the red packet for the tape.

  2. Roll the red packet as shown in the picture. Secure it with some tape. Tied a string to the decoration.

Making the bottom part of the lantern

  1. Stapler the bottom corner of 4 red packets together. Leave the last red packet undone.

  2. Tape the bottom decoration to the inside of the lantern as shown in the picture.

  3. Pull the decoration to the outside of the lantern. Stapler the last corner of the red packet to close the lantern.

Joining the lantern together

  1. Final step. Take the top and bottom part of the lantern and stapler them together as shown in the picture. The corners will not match like the rest of the corners but it is ok.

Excellent. Super fun to do with the children and myself. I think it can be done also for other occasions (Christmas, Halloween, etc..). Congratulations.
