Christmas Tree Traditions

Traditions: Christmas Trees and Ornaments The fir tree has a long association with Christianity, it began in Germany almost 1,000 years ago when St Boniface, who converted the German people to Christianity, was said to have come across a group of pagans worshiping an oak tree. In anger, St Boniface is said to have cut down the oak tree and to his amazement a young fir tree sprung up from the roots of the oak tree. St Boniface took this as a sign of the Christian faith. But it was not until the 16th century that fir trees were brought indoors at Christmas time.Links on the Christmas Tree Traditions!

Stories behind the great traditions of ChristmasStories Behind the Great Traditions of Christmas (Stories Behind Books) (Hardcover) ... by Ace Collins (Author) "Advent is a word often heard during the weeks leading up to the Christmas season, but as many churches do not actually celebrate Advent, great..." (more)

“As a Christian for 10 years, I realized this year how little I knew about Christmas traditions. When I found this book, I thought it was good enough to use as the basis for an adult (as opposed to children) Sunday School class. Feedback has been very enthusiastic! The book is well written, and an easy and interesting read. Each chapter covers a different Christmas tradition. Chapters are typically 5 7 pages. I highly recommend this book.” By Robert A. Mara "r" (Gainesville, VA)

Stories Behind the Great Traditions of Christmas (Stories Behind Books)

Collins serves up some little-known holiday history in this interesting book that teems with Christmas facts and legends, arranged alphabetically by topic. Readers will be fascinated to learn, for example, that the holiday shopping season used to be only a couple of weeks long, but was extended during WWII so families could get care packages off to soldiers in a timely fashion. Or that St. Francis of Assisi was one of the first people to use a live nativity scene to teach others about Christ's birth. Collins tackles customs such as Christmas gifts and cards, and the popularity of cultural events like the Nutcracker and the Messiah (which, intriguingly, fell entirely out of fashion in the decades after Handel's death). There are chapters on the history of holly, mistletoe, Christmas trees, candy canes, poinsettias, yule logs, stockings and-of course - Santa Claus.
