Making Christmas Even More Special

Every year my mom and I come together in the kitchen to make Christmas special. For our family, friends, neighbors, and anyone God puts on our hearts to bless. We make lots of food and desserts, and we go to friends' Christmas parties, and have people over too. I would like to share with you what we do, and how you can do it too if you want!

A Christmas Tree of course!

Let's get started with the tree! When we go looking for the perfect tree, we go to Apple Hill, CA! It is right outside of my home-town, cozy little Placerville tucked away in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

Apple Hill is very popular in northern California in the fall for, of course, apples! They also sell tons of Pumpkins during October... But when Christmas time comes, this is where you want to get your tree!

We go as a family and cut down our own tree to take home. Going out in the nice chilly weather with my family to cut down our own Christmas tree is exciting, and the kids look forward to it every year!

While in Apple Hill we buy home-made apple juices, honey, and all kinds of fresh stuff! There are stands all over of local merchants selling hand-crafted things that give that special touch to your household for the holiday, or for all year!

Making an event out of the day is what we do, and boy does it give long lasting, wonderful memories!

A big tradition in a little town...

Every year we go to the "Festival of Lights" on downtown historic Main St. All the stores stay open late, the high school band is playing Christmas music, hot apple cider and fresh popcorn are on hand, or you can choose to show up early and have a wonderful dinner in one of the the many restaurants gracing Main St.

Davey "Doc" Wiser gives free stage coach rides for hours all evening. We, without a fail, always make it a point to take the little ones on it! My daughter Willow Rae was entertained by the horses especially this year, now that she is old enough to really know and understand everything that is going on (she will be 3 soon).

After we ride the stage coach, we go and see the "Tree Lighting Ceremony." There is a huge old tree right across the way from the court house that gets wrapped in lights and lit all month long on this special night!

The Reason for the Season

Most of society right now is trying to push God out of our country. A lot of people are trying to say that He doesn't exist! But He does, oh ho ho, He does! And a lot of people are trying to push Jesus out of the Christmas celebrations.

Christmas is the celebration of Jesus' birth, even though He was born in the month of Nissan (Jewish calender, March-April). He was born in the Spring, however we celebrate His birth in winter. This is because the Catholic church changed it over to coincide with Yule, a pagan holiday.

However, this does not take away from the fact that Jesus has been the reason for this season for hundreds of years!

He is the reason we celebrate Christmas.

Getting crafty with cookies

There are certain cookies that my mom and I make every year, that I sometimes think I couldn't live without! We call some by different names than what everyone else knows them by, but it is okay! It makes it more fun when you're little.

"Snowball Cookies" are what we call them, but they are also known as "Mexican Wedding Cakes," or "Russian Teacakes." We always use Walnuts with these, although some recipes call for pecans. Actually, we tend to use Walnuts in all our cookies!

"Jam Thumbprint cookies" are another of our favorite types of cookies! I always had fun with these when I was little, making all the "thumbprints" in the cookies for the jam. We try to use jams/jellies that we don't use in peanut butter and jelly sandwiches normally. For instance, we like to use blackberry, raspberry; or any other jams besides grape, strawberry, and mixed berry jellies/jams. Also, a tinted Confectioner's sugar icing can be used in place of the jam.

The classic cookie we make every year for Christmas (and many other times during the year for this one) is... **drum roll please** Chocolate Chip Cookies! These will never fail if you are trying to win over a new friend, who is a toddler. If you have a nephew or niece who you are finally meeting, who is 2+ years in age, these will never fail you! Nor will you be displeased with them if you are making them for your one and only husband.

You can find the recipe for "Mexican Wedding Cakes" in the Joy of Cooking cookbook. Also to be found in this book is many Christmas cookies recipes... Viennese Crescents, Almond Thumbprint Cookies, Drie Augen (three eyes, in German), Springerle, and Bourbon Balls to name just a few, can be found in there!

You can also find the recipes I use for the "Snowball Cookies" under "Russian Teacakes," and "Chocolate Chip" cookies in Betty Crocker's Cookbook.

Just look towards the bottom to get your very own copies now!

Speaking of men...

One of my favorite sayings is...

"The way to a mans heart is through his stomach."

Men Love Food!

... And they love a woman who is crafty in the kitchen! When my husband David and I were engaged, I expressed to him my doubt in cooking. I had never made an entire dinner before, I had just done prep work for my mom, or side dishes. I had baked cookies, but nothing else.

However, once we were married and I was left to a clean kitchen needing to be messed up with dishes to be cooked in for dinner, I got crafty! I more often than not left the cookbooks on the shelf and turned to the internet for dinner recipes. Especially if I was in a squeeze. Many times this scenario has happened to me, with many other meats, but I will use ground beef as an example...

It is 3:00PM and I have forgotten to take a meat out to defrost to make dinner with! So I open up my freezer and pull out ground beef. I am so not in the mood for Meat Loaf, or Stroganoff. I cannot simply look up "ground beef" recipes in my cookbooks, they don't have that section! But, I can go to my friend google, and type in "ground beef recipes" and man do I suddenly have thousands of recipes at my fingertips!

Duel

Using both the internet and cookbooks are okay! It all depends on what you are looking for! One of my best friends is Betty Crocker, and the other is Google!

Do you think looking in cookbooks is better, or online for recipes?

Online of course! I rather go the lazy way!

Cari_Kay says:

I love using both!

MomwithAHook says:

I enjoy google, for it's large library and selection of different cultural foods.

happynutritionist says:

I have a nice selection of cookbooks from the pre-internet days, now always search online for recipes.

luvmyludwig says:

I love my cookbooks, but I'd have to say online is my favorite.

Katie May says:

ONLINE!!! :) soooo many more choices and it's easier to find something i'm looking for in one place rather than grabbing out alllll of my heavy cookbooks to find something.

Cookbooks! It is what my mama taught me, and I am a traditionalist to the roots!

BarbRad says:

I love and collect cookbooks. Besides, it's in the book and I don't have to print it out. It's also fast in its own way, if you have several books you can look through.

Li-Li-ThePinkBookworm says:

I like cookbooks because they are automatically at hand and you can thumb through multiple sections in a couple minutes, without having to wait for a page to load. Online is nice when I do not have a specific recipe, but for regular food cookbooks keep traditional cooking alive.

Jewelsofawe says:

Either way is fine as long as the food taste good.

RinchenChodron says:

Cookbooks - I have never thought to look up a recipe on-line even tho I use the computer all the time!

Heather says:

Cookbooks definitely!!!

Another Tradition of ours ;)

Traditional TV Specials We Catch...

Honestly, in my house we watch very little Television.

My daughter watches channel 6 PBS every morning, and that is about it for the TV on a normal day.

When Christmas time comes around, the TV is on much more often! We are always looking for morally good Christmas movies to watch! Our Christmas TV starts with the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade. I just finally realized this year that there is NOTHING Thanksgiving about it, it is all about Christmas!

And then, you can always find a movie countdown to Christmas Day... This is normally on the family channel. But I warn you now, not all movies on there are suited for the whole family. Some have things in them that you may not want to show your toddler yet. But you can then just find another movie! They are always on!

A Charlie Brown Christmas is a movie we watch every year!

Hanukkah!

Another very special holiday we celebrate around the Christmas season is Hanukkah. I don't recommend this holiday for everyone, just Jews and Christians.

Why would a Christian celebrate Hanukkah?
Well, think about it...
Christians believe in Jesus, the Jewish Messiah.
Christians believe the whole Bible is the Word of God. And God used Jewish men to write the entire Bible, from Genesis to Revelation.
Christians celebrate pagan holidays without knowing it... Why not celebrate a holiday that worship's God?

We celebrate Hanukkah to get our family more focused on God. Hanukkah is a holiday in which we remember a miracle from God.

After the Maccabees fought and beat Antiochus and his armies, they returned to their temple. Their temple had been robbed and was thrashed, and there was only enough oil to last them one day. But God extended this oil enough for one day, to last them 8 days! Hence why there are eight candles on the menorah.

Snag some good books now!

I went looking for local Christmas traditions to use in my discovery section, and I chose this one to supplement my own. It actually complements my Paso Robles Vine Street Showcase lens perfectly, because your town, as well as your family has its traditions.
