Christmas is my favorite time of the year. From the day after Christmas until Christmas Eve the following year, I find myself counting down until the big day. I love all the different ways you've found to make Christmas even more special.

This lens has been a great eye opener for me! For example, I didn't realise that the 12 Days of Christmas song had any religious symbolism. I like your selection of Advent Calendars, but I think I'll go with an Advent Wreath next year. Happy Christmas!

Starting at 12 and going down....Idon't think I will ever forget them. 12 Drummers drumming, 11 pipers piping, 10 lords-a-leaping, 9 ladies dancing, 8 maids a milkin'..... Fun times! :)

Christ Mass has taken on especially poignant significance (and 'Advent') since the Coming May 23, 1844 of the One, like unto the Son of Man AND the coming in 1853 of the Lord of Hosts in the Glory of God. Each Christ Mass season, prayers lead more Christians to accept Christ in the Glory of the Father...

Of eating and tradition telling Folklore wealth in my country:

An important part of Christmas is also a rich feast, in the year ended, harvesting was done. There is a perception that the Christmas until midnight need to eat nine times, to have a wealth of home, just not lick your fingers. Table must be pig snouts, peas, beans, sausages, pies and other delicious things. Each dish had its own symbolic meaning:
Eat peas - one day cry, Eats snout - it will be great writing, Eat a round cake - expected a lot of sunny days.

Favorite tradition has to be cutting down the tree. Driving on a cold night, singing carols, sipping hot cocoa. The snow may be falling as we walk up and down to find that perfect tree. We never do, but we seem to find the one that is perfect for us.

We have cut shopping way back this year and it is the most relaxing season I can remember. We're focusing on the main reason we celebrate Christmas--celebrating Jesus-- and that takes the pressure off to run around in a shopping frenzy. Ever since the kids were little we would all make our own decoration for the tree...each year was a different theme, one year it was outdoors and the kids had to find things outside to make their ornament out of. The theory was, when they moved out they would take all of their decorations with them to start decorating their tree with :) Love this time of year and love your lens!!

Interesting lens - particularly about the Advent candles. I'd never heard of them being pink or purple or representing hope, peace, love and joy. In our church the 4 candles are red and represent God's people, the prophets, John the baptist and Mary respectively. I've got a lens on dairy free Advent calendars too.

Your lens helped put me in the Christmas mood! I used to love getting those chocolate Advent calendars as a kid :-) My son has nut allergies and it's hard to find one that is safe for him to have so I wrap 24 little boxes for him instead. Each box has a paper with something to do on it. Sometimes it's a Christmas craft, sometimes it tells him to eat a candy cane, or read a Christmas story with me. He looks forward to opening his box every day and seeing what he gets to do to prepare for Christmas.

I love all Christmas traditions. My kids love Advent calendars, we also make a wreath. Love Nativity scenes and we have a beautiful collection of figurines that was first started by my grandmother, but I think she inheritied it from her mother Our Chrsitmas tree is a big tradition as well, we make it different each year. Loved your Countdown to Christmas page :)

We all love chocolate so it's quite funny when my kids get their chocolate advent calendars and then my husband and I try to grab some behind their back (we never actually do it, but enjoy their reactions) Beautiful selection here Christene. Blessed~

Since I live in a post-socialist country in which Christmas traditions are not too many and have been long abandoned... our family traditions are just gathering around a laaarge table covered with enticing Christmas dishes. What is repetitive and each year is that all family mamabers come from far and away adn each one brings something delicious. It's not much but we enjoy it!

I don't like the way people turn this holiday seasoon into gifts tather its getting them or giving them. So many fight over this aspect alone. Others about the decorating, parties, etc. They even want to take Christ out of Christmas. They fogot that is truely what this seasion is all about. The word holiday actually means holy day. The symbolism of gifts only came from the 3 wisemen giving Frankensence, mer, and gold to the baby Jesus. What ever happen to the little drummer boy who had nothing but love to give to our newborn savior. I believe this season is more about shame and humlity. Christ left his holy and clean throne in Heaven to come to a dirty and sinfilled world to show us the way to help us to be clean from our sins. Lets not forget the 3 wisemen followed the northern star to get to baby Jesus. Lets not forget Jesus is the reason for the season. Thank you for sharing. Merry Christmas.

We go a little crazy with advent calendars at our house. I made one out of a cereal box spraypainted gold, with small boxes (matchboxes etc.) also spraypainted gold and glued on to fill with small presents for each day. Plus I do a personalized advent calendar, writing a special activity or fun item (like "dance around the room to your favourite Christmas song) on each day. Plus a chocolate calendar for each of our two girls, and we know when Christmas is coming!

When my children were small, a good friend gave us a handmade advent calendar. Not only was it happily used for many years, my son now has one for HIS son.

A sweet ornament tradition occurred because my daughter was born one week before Christmas and for her first 10 years her Godmother sent her a unique Christmas ornament every year for her birthday. Today she has all those special ornaments for her own tree. Have a Happy Holiday!

I enjoyed reading your lens and thanks for the brief history.
Before when we were young, we used to decorate our house with lots of chirtsmas light and different kinds of christmas decorations, but when we all started working, its too tedious to do all the decorations so, we limited it to a few decorations that are easy to display and also easy to remove.

My fav Christmas tradition would have to be putting up the tree. I always buy a few decorations each year, thinking I probably need more and then I get everything out and realize I have a lot already. But then I like a tree groaning under decorations!

Lovely lens! I loved the information about the advent calendars. One of my favorite Christmas traditions is filling Christmas stockings. My mom made knitted stockings for my brothers and me and we loved waking up on Christmas morning and opening up all of the little wrapped goodies. Some of my best childhood memories are of those dark and cold mornings spent with my brothers making bloonies and putting on my new lip gloss. I have made cross-stitched stockings for my husband and son and we carry on the tradition today. In fact, before we were married, I made my husband commit to continuing the tradition before I would agree to marry him. :-P

What a nice lens, I really liked the "tracking of Santa" what a good idea. The advent calendars are beautiful. I have always had home made advent calendars, more thoughtful and personal, if parents have the time it can be a lot more involving for a child. 5*

This year we will hand down one special family heirloom to each of our grown children. We will include a little note about the family's history of that special ornament, and a sturdy container to be sure they last for many more Christmases.

My fiancé comes from Germany and he actually celebrates Christmas on Christmas Eve! They have a big beautiful feast on the 24th and open all of their presents. The next morning (25th) all of the kids spend the day playing with their new toys. I am from Australia and we celebrate Christmas on the 25th, which works out great for our 2 young children because they get to have 2 Christmas's every year! Germany is a beautiful country, esspecially at Christmas. They have the most beautiful Chistmas Markets.

This is a great lens and I hope that everyone has a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Christmas is the most grandiose event that we celebrate every year. Although most of us may complain of the expenses that come with it, we must admit it is that time of the year when everybody just needs to feel happy, and for kids to get lots and lots of presents. Happy Christmas everyone!

Christene - you make beautiful lenses! This year we made our advent wreath w/real pine/spruce boughs (it smells great!) - and we read from an Advent booklet each night. I have a multitude of advent calendars (it's a challenge to get them out & up each year by Dec 1st!) of all kinds. And, yes, I give the kids a special tree ornament each year - it's the gift that they open Christmas eve before going to bed. Each Christmas Eve we go to Marble Collegiate Church (NYC, 5th Ave & 29th St) for a beautiful "Lessons & Carrols" service, then stroll by all the "windows" and Rockefeller Center! All the Best, Tree

For the Advent Wreath my Mum always uses fresh holly from the garden and four purple candles with a fifth white one in the centre. We light a purple candle during Sunday lunch each week during Advent and then include the central white one during lunch on Christmas Day. I don't know if this is an English tradition or just in our family.

Thas was a very enjoyable lens to read, in fact, it has brightened me up no end. Here's why, we put our christmas decorations up yesterday (internal and external) I get the freezing cold option doing the outside stuff, had no end of prob's with lights not working and slippery tiles and came in and took a couple of hours to thaw out. When I started thinking is it worth it ? I just thought of my little grandaughters (aka the little chickens) faces and of course it was worth it! Having read this I'm lovin' christmas again. Thank you very much. Mark.

Your lens was amazing. Thank you so much! I remember as a kid lighting the advent wreath once a week and saying the rosary. As an adult now with 8 children, we make sure to light it each night and pray our night prayers. The children look forward to it and get to take turns blowing out the candles when we are done.
  • Sunfish Nov 28, 2008 @ 9:29 pm | delete
Thank you for this beautiful lens. We have a great nativity scene tradition in my family. We usually put it up late in the season when most of us are at my parents so we can do it together, with many characters, sheeps, herders, and other animals to arrange. The 3 kings are set aside a little further from the nativity scene to symbolize their journey. It becomes a game to bring them closer as the days get closer to King's Day in January, when they are finally placed in front visiting the manger. It's a tradition I carry on with my own set, to which I add periodically.

Very nice lens. 5***** One of my favourite Christmas Traditions was starting Christmas Dinner with the family, and all pulling our Christmas Crackers at the table. Then we would all pull out the paper hats and put them on, see what novelty gifts we had, read the jokes inside (usually very bad), and then enjoy the best meal of the year.

We've been celebrating Advent for 28 years now in our family. We put our tree up on the first Sunday of Advent (this year--Nov. 31), and then we read the Bible, sing, make ornaments, make cookies for shutins, etc. We celebrate right through Christmas all the way till Epiphany. I'm Italian-American, and we have a seafood dinner on Christmas Eve (your suppose to have 7 different fish), my family use to go to midnight mass (there's only 3 of us left now). We were allowed to open one gift around midnight. My father was either in the choir or an usher, and most of the neighborhood would be there. It was nice.

Terrific lens to browse through. I am Scots, and most of our traditions are attached to New Years. However, for Christmas I think a quite day you can enjoy is the best. A Christmas Tree is a beautiful thing to behold, especially on Christmas Eve or on Christmas Night.

Just wish that television folks would show all the Christmas shows they use to, and not just the secular Christmas ones.

Five *, favourite and lensroll to my Christmas lens and to my "The Greatest Story Ever Told" lens.

On Thanksgiving, we sit down as a family and watch Scrooge...every version one after another. My sons eventually wander away and tune in a football game but they get the point. The real meaning of Christmas will be the focus in our house.

What a refreshing change to see something about the meaning of Christmas. It can all too often get lost in a sea of commercialism.

We always put out a Christmas-themed jigsaw puzzle for the month of December and work on it whenever we have a few moments. I read about a family that works a jigsaw puzzle on Christmas eve and has a set meal (comfort food) and set treats to go with the puzzle. Someone even reads a Christmas story aloud while they work on the puzzle!

Lensrolled to my Christmas Jigsaw Puzzle lens!

One of the best traditions we had when I was younger was to have all the relatives over tot he house for an evening in the week between Christmas and New Year. We kids would show off our presents and the grown-ups would have a nice time visiting during what is normally a hectic time of year.

Well, in honor of counting down to Christ's "birthday" I'd just like to say HAPPY BIRTHDAY to a gifted and immensely helpful lensmaster, Christine.

PS - my favorite part of counting down is actually planning what we're going to bake for everyone and then spacing out what we can make ahead and freeze (like mini loafs) and what has to be done later. We end up baking a few different things each night for about 2 weeks before the holidays. It's our tradition.
  • Sep 3, 2008 @ 3:21 pm | delete
nice looking lens. Not sure I want Christmas to come too soon as the summer was too short this year. Still, with the kids around it will be great. Nice to know exactly how many days to go.

I love this lens, you've done a wonderful job! Lots of information and tips. I know I will keep checking back as we get close to Christmas. We love the advent wreath, the kids get to take turns lighting and blowing out the candles (with our help of course). It has been said that my house looks like Christmas exploded! Love the decorations!

In my family we had what french-canadians call "Un reveillon". It is a meal after the Christmas mass at midnight.

We were so excited to share the tasty dishes that my mom made just for that night. After we finished the meal, we would open up our gifts.
Sometimes we would go to bed at 4:00AM.
