A Truly Great American Novelist
Christopher Moore is an American writer of absurdist fiction. He grew up in Mansfield, Ohio, and attended Ohio State University and Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, California.
Moore's novels typically involve conflicted everyman characters suddenly struggling through supernatural or extraordinary circumstances. Inheriting a humanism from his love of John Steinbeck and a sense of the absurd from Kurt Vonnegut, Moore is a best-selling author with major cult status.
Why I love the writing of Christopher Moore
One of the best things about Christopher Moore is that if you write him an eMail, he will reply! I don't know many authors or celebrities who have the time or inclination to respond to their fans with the speed or consistency as Moore but it is something I appreciate. I emailed him twice and received a reply within 24 hours.
One aspect to Moore's writing that I absolutely love is how he is able to reuse characters and locations. In one book, you will be interested to a slew of characters and the protoganist will often be in another book, often as a side-character in a completely different setting/job. What is 'comfortable' about this is that it allows the reader to identify with the characters as you get to know them throughout the writer's bibliography.
I would compare Moore's writing to that of Kurt Vonnegut Jr., Douglas Adams, and Mark Twain. He is very satirical and quite hilarious. He also takes several pages in the back of the books to explain where he got his research from as well as thank those that provided it. Mr. Moore is truly an author to admire and emulate.
