Sleeping Disorders

Did you get a good nights sleep? Are you feeling fatigues, tired, depressed, lack of energy or just the feeling of not being fully rested?

These are the common symptoms of someone suffering from a Sleep Disorder.

Sleeping Disorders can be classifed into several categores:

           Insomnia
           Narcolepsy
           Obstructive sleep apnea
           Restless leg syndrome
           Periodic limb movement disorder
           Hypersomnia

Common Sleeping Disorders

Common Sleeping Disorders
The most common sleep disorders include:

* Bruxism: The sufferer involuntarily grinds his or her teeth while sleeping.

* Delayed sleep phase syndrome (DSPS): A sleep disorder of circadian rhythm, characterized by the inability to wake up and fall asleep at the desired times, but not by inability to stay asleep.

* Hypopnea syndrome: Abnormally shallow breathing or slow respiratory rate while sleeping.

* Narcolepsy: The condition of falling asleep spontaneously and unwillingly.

* Night terror or Pavor nocturnus or sleep terror disorder: abrupt awakening from sleep with behavior consistent with terror.

* Parasomnias: Include a variety of disruptive sleep-related events.

* Periodic limb movement disorder (PLMD): Involuntary movement of arms and/or legs during sleep. See also Hypnic jerk, which is not a disorder.

* Rapid eye movement behavior disorder (RBD): Acting out violent or dramatic dreams while in REM sleep.

* Restless legs syndrome (RLS): An irresistible urge to move legs while sleeping. Often accompanies PLMD.

* Shift work sleep disorder (SWSD).

* Sleep apnea: The obstruction of the airway during sleep.

* Sleepwalking or somnambulism: Engaging in activities that are normally associated with wakefulness (such as eating or dressing), which may include walking, without the conscious knowledge of the subject.

* Snoring: Loud breathing patterns while sleeping, sometimes accompanying sleep apnea.

Sleeping Disorder - Insomnia - What is Insomnia

What is Insomnia

Insomnia is a sleep disorder characterized by an inability to sleep and/or inability to remain asleep for a reasonable period. Insomniacs typically complain of being unable to close their eyes or "rest their mind" for more than a few minutes at a time. Both organic and non organic insomnia constitute a sleep disorder.

It can be caused by fear, stress, anxiety, medications, herbs, caffeine, depression, or bipolar disorder and sometimes occurs for no apparent reason. An overactive mind or physical pain may also be causes.

Finding the underlying cause of insomnia is usually necessary to cure it. Insomnia can be common after the loss of a loved one, even months or a year after the death, if they are not grieving correctly (pretending they are over it when they are not).

It very often occurs when the person has a lack of food or not enough variety of foods (such as eating one food over and over again).

Sleeping Disorder - Narcolepsy - What is Narcolepsy

What is Narcolepsy

Narcolepsy is a neurological condition most characterized by Excessive Daytime Sleepiness (EDS).

A narcoleptic will most likely experience disturbed nocturnal sleep, confused with insomnia, and disorder of REM or rapid eye movement sleep. It is a type of dyssomnia.

Sleeping Disorder - Sleep Apnea - What is Sleep Apnea

What is Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder characterized by pauses in breathing during sleep. These episodes, called apneas (literally, "without breath"), each last long enough so one or more breaths are missed, and occur repeatedly throughout sleep.

The standard definition of any apneic event includes a minimum 10 second interval between breaths, with either a neurological arousal (3-second or greater shift in EEG frequency, measured at C3, C4, O1, or O2), or a blood oxygen desaturation of 3-4 percent or greater, or both arousal and desaturation. Sleep apnea is diagnosed with an overnight sleep test called a polysomnogram.

Clinically significant levels of sleep apnea are defined as 5 events of any type or greater per hour of sleep time (from the polysomnogram). There are two distinct forms of sleep apnea: Central and Obstructive. Breathing is interrupted by the lack of effort in Central Sleep Apnea; in Obstructive Sleep Apnea, breathing is interrupted by a physical block to airflow despite effort. In Mixed Sleep Apnea, there is a transition from central to obstructive features during the events themselves.

Regardless of type, the individual with sleep apnea is rarely aware of having difficulty breathing, even upon awakening. Sleep apnea is recognized as a problem by others witnessing the individual during episodes or is suspected because of its effects on the body (sequelae). Symptoms may be present for years, even decades without identification, during which time the sufferer may become conditioned to the daytime sleepiness and fatigue associated with significant levels of sleep disturbance. The definitive diagnosis of sleep apnea is made by polysomnography.

Sleeping Disorder - Restless Leg Syndrome - What is Restless Leg Syndrome

What is Restless Leg Syndrome

Restless legs syndrome (RLS, or Wittmaack-Ekbom's syndrome) is poorly understood, often misdiagnosed, and believed to be a neurological disorder.

It is sometimes mistakenly called "Ekbom's syndrome", but that is an entirely different condition that shares part of the Wittmaack-Ekbom syndrome eponym: delusional parasitosis, as both syndromes were described by the same person, Karl-Axel Ekbom.

Many doctors express the view that the incidence of restless leg syndrome is exaggerated by manufacturers of drugs used to treat it.

Many people tap their feet or shake their legs resulting from a nervous tic, consumption of stimulants, drug side-effects or other factors; this is quite distinct from the condition discussed here and is usually innocuous, even unnoticed, and does not interfere with daily life.

I sometimes try to bore myself to sleep by thinking about just mundane things, not anything that will raise the blood pressure, just "I wonder if it will snow tomorrow. If that happens it will be pretty out." Etc. All said in monotones. :)
