One of the inventors of Rock n Roll, Chuck Berry

Personal photos and stories, plus links to Chuck's world. This photo by the author with a cell phone camera. Chuck Berry created much of the vocabulary of Rock and Roll, from guitar riffs to song styles.

Hail! Hail! Rock N' Roll

I was there!

Yes, I was there for part of the filming of this remarkable view of Check Berry. Specifically, I was at the second show in St. Louis' marvelous Fox Theater. The experience of attending the filming was certainly part agony and part ecstasy, what with having to wait outside in the cold for about four hours before they let us in, since a second (earlier) show was added after the first one sold out. There were a lot of musical highlights, however, and many of these plus much more, was captured in the final film, a startlingly frank look at the life and music of Chuck Berry.

Keith Richards' gift to the world

As far as I can tell, there is footage in the original cut that can't be found in the 4-disc collectors edition, though of course the reverse is true, and maybe I just haven't absorbed the whole 4-disc set enough yet... Anyway, being a bit obsessive about music, I've enjoyed both versions of Hail! Hail! Rock N' Roll, and also enjoyed The Search for Robert Johnson. Kudos to Keith Richards for his role in getting Chuck's music documented with good sound and a top band, and for trying to get Chuck to take his own music more seriously. Revelatory is the obvious word for these films, but they are also fun and fascinating.

Chuck is best known to the general public for the "Great Twenty-eight," his radio hits, but he is a prolific composer who works within a much wider range of musical styles than many realize. The Chess boxed set gives us access to many of his other classics, such as "Wee Wee Hours," a B-side to a single, and some covers of other composers material, including Guitar Slim's blues classic, "The Things I Used To Do."
