Founded as a sugar plantation in the early mid 1800s, growing sugar cane was king, that is until the sugar cane blight hit the area. But not to be defeated, the farmers and growers changed their crops from sugar cane to sugar beets, and Imperial Sugar continued in operation. The City of Sugar Land was incorporated in 1959, and is the largest city in Fort Bend County. The City of Sugar Land is the third-largest in population and second-largest in economic activities of the Houston Metropolitan area.

City of Sugar LandCity of Sugar Land is home to the headquarters of Imperial Sugar which has the distinction of being the oldest continuously operated business in the State of Texas at over 150 years old. The City of Sugar Land also holds the headquarters for The Coca-Cola company's Minute Maid Division, Western Airways and a major manufacturing facility for Nalco Chemical Company. In addition, City of Sugar Land has a large number of international energy, software, engineering, clean manufacturing and product firms. A good part of City of Sugar Land's growth is focused on making City of Sugar Land an employment center. By giving tax incentives to medium to large size companies, several corporate headquarters have relocated to the area in the last few years.

City of Sugar LandCity of Sugar Land has the most master-planned communities in Fort Bend County. And Fort Bend County is home to the largest number of master-planned communities in the nation, including First Colony, New Territory, Telfair, Greatwood, Chelsea Harbour, Riverstone and many others. City of Sugar Land holds the title of "Fittest City in Texas" for the population 50,000-100,000 range, a title it has held for four consecutive years from 2004 to 2007. And I do not understand how that is possible, because there are so many fine restaurants and great places to go and eat in the area, it would seem that fitness would give way to our love of eating, but I guess self control and moderation are the key.

In 2006 CNN/Money and Money magazine ranked City of Sugar Land third on its list of the 100 Best Cities to Live in the United States.

In 2007, City of Sugar Land was ranked fifth on a list of Safest Cities in the United States, according to the latest national crime statistics.
All in all, City of Sugar Land Texas is truly a sweet place to live!
