The Classic Horse Stories Of Marguerite Henry
What I really love about Marguerite Henry's books is the stories are based on real horses (though some are heavily fictionalized.) Marguerite Henry's writing style is enchanting enough but it's the beautiful artwork that sealed the deal for me, Most of the books have gorgeous color artwork in them by artist Wesley Dennis, who worked with Henry for 21 years illustrating her books. Marguerite Henry wrote over 60 books before her death at age 95.
Pictured here are primarily my favorite childhood classics. I love looking at the artwork (like pictured here) which was so beautifully done in those days. Of course all of these book are still in publication and available as new. And several have movies made form the books. But since I'm collecting the old. The old is what I have pictured.

About The Author Marguerite Henry
Wikipedia on Marguerite HenryMarguerite Henry was an American writer. Henry inspired children all over the world with her love of animals, especially horses. The author of fifty-nine books based on true stories of horses and other animals, her work has captivated entire generations of children and young adults and won several Newbery Awards and Honors. Among the more famous of her works was Misty of Chincoteague, which was the basis for the 1961 movie Misty, and several sequel books.
. . . Henry's love of animals started during her childhood. Soon afterwards, she also discovered a love for writing when her parents presented her with a writing desk for Christmas. Henry later said, "At last I had a world of my very own -- a writing world, and soon it would be populated by all the creatures of my imagination."

Story Premise
This is the story of the Godolphin Arabian which is the most recognized ancestor of the superior thoroughbred horses like Man 'o War and Seabiscuit. It is highly fictionalized but still makes a great read.
. A Sultan Of Morocco gifts six of his most perfect stallions each with it's own stableboy to His Majesty, Louis XV, the boy king. They were ill cared for on the voyage and arrived skin and bones. The young king sent them all back except one (Sham, the hero horse of this book) because his cook needed a cart horse.
The story chronicles his travels from Morocco to France to England where, at last Sham is recognized for his beauty and superior bloodlines.

Brighty Of The Grand Canyon
The Classic Horse Books Of Marguerite Henry
Story Premise Brighty is based on actual incidents in the life of a Grand Canyon burro. Once again the story is highly fictionalized but it offers an interesting story of intrigue as Brighty searches for the killer of his prospector friend.
Justin Morgan Had A Horse
The Classic Horse Books Of Marguerite Henry
Story Premise
This book tells the story of a man (Justing Morgan) who is given a small runty horse in lieu of cash payment. He doesn't want the horse but as it's small and runty he really can't sell it either. He has a friend Joel break the colt and they soon discover he is a powerfully built little horse. This is based on the true story about how this one horse becomes the foundation for the breed, The American Morgan Horse.

About Wesley Dennis
John) Wesley Dennis was an American illustrator best known for his collaboration with author Marguerite Henry, with whom he published 15 books. He illustrated over 150 books in his lifetime, including Anna Sewell's Black Beauty and John Steinbeck's The Red Pony. He also wrote and illustrated a few books of his own, among which are Flip, Flip and the Cows, Flip and the Morning, and Tumble.
. . . At age 17, he set out for Boston to look for work. He found illustration jobs with several department stores, including Jordan Marsh and Filene's. He did not intend to become an artist. "Most of my new friends were spending the mornings at the Boston Museum drawing from plaster casts. They wanted to be artists. They usually were broke." However, his brother Morgan convinced him to try to make a living drawing horses. Dennis began by sketching racetrack winners, hoping to receive portrait commissions from the owners. This brought some success. He decided to further his education, and traveled to France to study with artist Lowes Dalbiac Luard, an expert on horse anatomy.
In 1941, he published his first book, Flip, a "fanciful story about a pony named Flip and his desire to jump the brook." His illustrations attracted author Marguerite Henry, who later wrote, "I had just finished writing Justin Morgan Had a Horse, and wanted the best horse artist in the world to illustrate it. So I went to the library, studied the horse books, and immediately fell in love with the work of Will James and Wesley Dennis. When I found out that Will James was dead, I sent my manuscript to Wesley Dennis." Thus began a 20 year collaboration which resulted in the publication of 15 book

Marguerite Henry Books Are Heavily Illustrated By Wesley Dennis

One of the other great things about these Marguerite Henry Books is they are thickly illustrated. Not just with color plates but also with black and white drawings. Most books you can barely go more than a few pages with out some sort of artwork to add to the story.
White Stallions Of Lipizza
The Classic Horse Books Of Marguerite Henry
Story Premise This is the story of a Viennese boy who's dream is to ride with the Spanish Riding School of his native Vienna. The story is about how attains this goal. Once again the illustrations are stunning.
Album Of Horses
The Classic Horse Books Of Marguerite Henry
There is no story per se with this book. It is a compilation of horse breeds accompanied by the breeds history told in a warm story telling fashion. Not just the cold facts.
This was not a book I owned but I do remember checking it out of the school library countless times to flip through the many pictures of different horse breeds and read a little about them. Once again the book is graced with the art of Wesley Dennis

- Oh my goodness, I didn't know that Miss Henry wrote so many books. I grew up with Misty of Chincoteague Island and Stormy. That little wannabee cowgirl in me relished these books. Thanks for all the information.

- Wow! Misty of Chincoteague was the first I read. I hadn't thought about these books in ages, but I did adore them when I was younger. I now need to get my hands on them and share them with my daughter. I'll need to go and call my mom, now... :) Thank you!
