E Type Jag | A Classic Jaguar Car

Ranked #2,019 in Cars, #106,356 overall

Jag E-type - The Ultimate Classic Car

The E-type Jag was revealed in 1961 and became an instant classic. It was not only one of the best looking cars ever built (designed by Malcolm Sayer) it was fast, refined and for its class, cheap. An Aston Martin would be over £3,000 compared to an E-type at £2,000.

Jaguar XKE

Series l

It came with the 13-year old XK engine developing 265 bhp at 5,500rpm, a carry-over from the previous sporting Jaguar the Jaguar XK150S. In original road tests from the sixties it was capable of doing 0-60mph in 6.9 seconds, and 0-120mph in 25.9 seconds. Top speed was over 150mph, although Jaguar later admitted that these early cars released as a test fleet to the press had been 'breathed' upon to make sure they could crack that magic 150mph figure, the super car bench mark of the day. The average owner of a standard version would only see around 140-145mph.

In 1964 the engine size was increased to 4.2 litres improving the torque figure rather than power and so making the car easier to drive. It also got a better gearbox than the old Moss crash-box. A good 4.2 engined-car would pull 53mph in first, 82mph in second, 112mph in third, and could hit 120 mph in under 30 seconds. The engine is generally quite strong but the thinner-walled block can crack on occasions. Spares for the old Moss gearbox can be hard to find and a new clutch is an engine-out job on all models.

Appeals for a roomier car and an auto-box for the American market were answered in 1966 when a 2+2 version was released. This body-shell had an extra 9" in the wheelbase allowing for a small rear bench-seat and also more space between the chassis rails to allow an auto-box to be squeezed in. It was also the start of the downhill slope for the E-type as it also put on weight and started to become less of a sports car and more of a grand tourer.

The Series ll E-type

A 2+2 and auto option arrives

Announced in October 1968 for the E Type Jag the rot had really set in as various modifications had to be made to aerodynamics and style to meet new American safety legislation. The headlight covers were removed and bumper heights had to be changed and worst of all the engine was strangled by the fitting of twin Zenith carburettors in place of the original triple SU carbs to meet emission laws. Power was down to a meagre 171bhp in the North American versions and power steering and air-conditioning were both now options, sapping power still further.

The six-cylinder Jaguar E-types story ends in 1971 when it was replaced with the new V12 engined Series lll car, a much softer car that Jaguar actually struggled to sell the remaining few of in 1975 when the new XJ-S had been launched.

The Series lll V12

No longer a pure sports car

The long-wheelbase body shell was used on all the Jaguar E-type V12s providing better interior space at the expense of more weight and a reduction in performance.

Power was only marginally up but torque got a decent boost and was delivered at lower revs meaning the car was around 2 seconds faster to the magic ton than a six-cylinder car.

The Series lll improved refinement at the expense of driver appeal.

The V12 is a tough engine but serious over heating can cause it to be scrapped as the cylinder heads weld themselves to the block on the all-aluminium unit.

Convertibles invariably sell for more than the fixed-head coupés and the first of the Series l cars, known as the flat-floor models, are worth the most due to scarcity. They were only made for the first year of production, after which the footwells were recessed to create more leg space to remove complaints about lack of space in the car from taller drivers.

If you want a good standard sports car the Series l 4.2 seems to be the optimum in terms of performance and handling. If you are looking for a good touring car then the V12 has the edge with better refinement and comfort but at cost of less-sharp handling.

If you prefer two wheels to four then check out this piece I wrote on the classic Honda CB400F, or its bigger brother the six-cylinder Honda CBX1000.

Of course if you feel like slumming it you could go the poor man's option and get something much cheaper (but pretty much as fast) like a Triumph TR7 V8.

OK, time to chip in your two cents worth...

Some more interesting bits on classic cars

From the sublime to the ridiculous

These are a few bits I have on the net about classic cars.
Classic Cars: Triumph Spitfire Sports Car
Designed yet again by Giovanni Michelotti it was announced to the public in October 1962 with a price of £730. A heater cost extra. It came with a twin-carb version of the Triumph Herald's 1147cc four-cylinder engine giving a 90mph top speed and 0-60mph in around 15 seconds. It had a four
Classic Cars: Triumph TR2 and TR3 Sports Cars
The Triumph TR2 and TR3, now commonly known as the 'sidescreen' triumphs to help differentiate them from the later TR4, TR5 and TR6 models which had wind up windows, began production in 1953 and ended in 1962 with over 80,000 being built in total. It is thought that around a quarter of the
Classic Cars: Triumph TR5, TR250 and TR6 Sports Cars
The mid-sixties saw Lucas develop a cheap and efficient fuel injection system which allowed better fuel metering. This allowed Triumph to take its six-cylinder Triumph 2000 engine and add a long-stroke crank...
Classic Cars: Triumph TR7 and TR8 Sports Cars
The slow decline of a once great name continued with the Triumph TR7. Many enthusiasts were outraged at what they saw as little more than Triumph trying to cash in on the old TR badge that had graced such...
Jaguar XK140 Classic British Sports Cars
Earls Court was to host the release of the new Jaguar XK140 in 1954. It had been designed very much with the needs of the American export market in mind and so Jaguar had worked to make the car easier to drive and more comfortable so naturally some of the sporting edge was lost due to increased weig
Jaguar XK120 - Classic British Sports Cars
The Jaguar XK120 hit the roads in 1948 and stunned a post-war public. A 120 mph top speed was astonishing in 1948 and for only £1,263. The XK120 was the first Jaguar to use the new DOHC 6-cylinder 3.4-litre engine with 160 bhp and it showed, with 0-60 mph coming up in 12 seconds on the later s
Classic Cars: Triumph GT6 Sports Car
The Triumph GT6 was yet again designed by Giovanni Michelotti as a coupé version of the Triumph Spitfire. The problem was that the extra weight and cost in building it meant that Triumph needed to justify that extra cost and a slower top speed from its original 1147cc engine was hardly going
Classic Cars: MG T-series
The MG T-series are some of my favourite classics. I love the look of that classic pre-war sports car and MG nailed it to perfection with the T-series. Pretty slow and a terribly harsh ride by today's...
Classic Cars: MGB, MGB GT and MGB GT V8
The 1962 London Motor Show was to see the launch of an all new MG, the MGB. Designed to replace the ageing MGA the MGB was not only five inches shorter than its predecessor but had more interior space in to the bargain. The old B-series 4-cylinder from the MGA was bored out yet further to take it fro
Classic Cars: Triumph TR4 and TR4A Sports Cars
Price was now up to £1,032 in the UK, but it was still good value and marginally quicker than its predecessor the TR3A. Top speed was around 110mph and 0-60mph in just under 11 seconds was possible, while 29mpg was a decent average. In 1962 US magazine Car and Driver got 0-100mph in 33 seconds
Classic Cars: MG Midget
The MG Midget was launched to the public in 1961 at just under £670. But it wasn't a completely new model, it was just new to the MG badge. A couple of years earlier Austin-Healey had released the 'Frogeye'...
Classic Cars: MGC
The MGC was supposed to be an extension to the MGB range, but it only lasted for two years, from 1967-1969. It was fitted with the Austin-Healey straight-6 of 2912cc capacity which needed a distinct bonnet...
MGA Sports Car
The MGA only had a seven year life from 1955-1962 with just over 100,000 being built. Unlike the later MGB the MGA still used a separate chassis and body, but still had the B-series engine installed. An early MGA 1500 (1489cc) had 68 bhp but was soon upgraded to 72 bhp which gave a top speed around 9
Classic Cars - Fiat 500
The cute, dinky little Fiat 500 is often the butt of humour, but when it was released in 1957 it was bought by thousands and provided a large part of Italy with transport.
