Who Graced Your Walls?

Welcome classic personality poster enthusiasts. This site will highlight some of the best personality posters from the 1970's and '80's. Emphasis is placed on posters produced by Pro Arts out of Medina Ohio, but other companies had some great poses out there as well and their efforts will be highlighted,  too.

Farrah's famous pose brought the poster industry to life and it's still going strong. During the 70's after Farrah's rise to super stardom, just about anyone who had a hit show or song on the radio got a chance to have their very own poster...and sometimes more than one! Shaun Cassidy, Cheryl Ladd, Lynda Carter, Parker Stevenson, and many more graced many a teenager's wall.

So..on with the tribute!

Loni Anderson's Two Beautiful Posters

Jennifer Marlowe on "WKRP in Cincinnati"

The poster on the left is from 1978 poster is from Dargis Associates and measures 22 x 34 in size. The white bikini poster is a Klymax Production and also from 1978 and measures about 20 x 28.

Loni is probably best remembered as Jennifer Marlowe, the receptionist who worked at radio station "WKRP in Cincinnati" from 1978 to 1982. In this series, the character Jennifer, was actually written as an intelligent blond which broke the usual stereo type of blond women being dingy or stupid. A perfect example of this mentality is Suzanne Somers' character of "Chrissy Snow" in "Three's Company" who went from, early on, being naive to later just being a vacuous blond.

Loni would later co star with another poster celebrity, Lynda Carter, in a detective series called "Partners in Crime" in 1984 and then in a short lived comedy series called "Easy Street" in 1986. She married Burt Reynolds in 1988 and divorced him in 1993, a situation that made tabloid headlines.

Susan Anton: A Golden Girl Who Advertises Muriel Cigars!

The Pro Arts poster, "Muriel", the title of the poster on the left is from 1978 and measures the usual 20 x 28. The title comes from the fact that Susan advertised Muriel Cigars.

The red swimsuit pose is from 1979 and is a Pro Arts issue being catalog #14-597. I have to admit that it sort of reminded me of Farrah's poster (with the red bikini and her long golden hair) and maybe that is what Pro Arts was hoping would happen and they would have another mega selling poster to their credit?

After her stint advertising Muriel Cigars, she moved on to being a spokesperson for Serta mattresses. Television called her name when she had a role as Susan Williams in the Cliffhangers show on NBC. It attempted to revive interest in the old time movie serial genre. Her segment was "Stop Susan Williams" a photo journalist who was seeking to find her brother's killer. The series ended before the Susan Williams segment reached a conclusion.

In 1979, she made a film called "Golden Girl" that didn't exactly set the box office on fire... but she went on to make other films, one of which was Cannonball Run II with Burt Reynolds. She had a hit country song when she did a duet with Fred Knoblock that landed in the Top Ten on the country charts.

Adrienne Barbeau: Swamp Thing's Babe

A 24 x 36 poster that was issued in 1978 and is also the cover of her autobiography, "There Are Worse Things I Could Do".

Adrienne has several things to her credit that you might best remember her for; the first is her portrayal of "Carol Traynor" on the classic TV series "Maude" that ran from 1972-78. The second having been married to director John Carpenter (they divorced in 84) and the third is her role in the classic horror film, "The Fog" in 1980... oh and yeah like Dolly Parton for also having a large bust.

Dirk Benedict: Space Hero

Starbuck On The Original Battlestar Galactica & Templeton Peck on the A Team

Like a lot of folks, I best remember Dirk from the TV series "Battlestar Galactica" (the original series), but a few years before that he starred in a very short lived series called "Chopper One". After Galactica, he went on to do a stint on the popular "A-Team" as well.

Dirk is a successful author having written two very well received books. Early in the 70's he was diagnosed with prostate cancer and he started a macrobiotic diet that he credits with curing his illness. He writes about it very openly and honestly in Confessions of a Kamikaze Cowboy.

I just have to mention also, that Dirk had a role in a cult favorite movie called "SSSSSSS" filmed in 1973. Dirk played a lab assistant to scientist who had a habit of turning his assistants into snakes, yeah poor Dirk didn't fare too well in that film.

I think there is one more poster of Dirk out there somewhere, if my memory serves me correctly. I seem to remember a pose of him leaning against a red wall. He is wearing a pair of blue jeans and a blue shirt that is unbuttoned? Can anyone verify this, or am I dreaming? :)

Lynda Carter: Wonder Woman's Secret Identity!

The poster on the left is one of the rarer Lynda posters to find, it seems. I believe it is from 1977 and is a Pro Arts issue. I think it's one of the most beautiful of all the posters Lynda had issued. On the right we see a 1978 pose titled "Ms. Carter". It was Pro Arts' best selling pose for 1978. The pose also graces the back cover of Lynda's debut album. "Portrait".

Shaun Cassidy: Da Doo Ron Ron

Another Cassidy Boy Steals Hearts, Makes Music and Poses For Posters!

The poster on the left is from 1977 and titled "Shaun Jacket" (catalog 314-574) and is from Pro Arts in association with Shaun's fan Club.

Of course, you know that Shaun is the son of actors Shirley Jones and Jack Cassidy and half brother of 70's teen idol, David Cassidy who played Keith Partridge on "The Partridge Family".

There was a rumor going around that the producers of "The Hardy Boys Nancy Drew Mysteries" had originally approached David to do the series. But, he refused saying he didn't want to get involved in the grind of another TV series. But, he did suggest that they look at his brother Shaun. Is there any truth to this rumor?

Shaun was making records in Germany in 1976 and in fact, had a hit there, called "Morning Girl", before having chart success here in the US.

In 1977 he auditioned for and won the role of Joe Hardy on the "Hardy Boys Nancy Drew Mysteries that ran for three years on ABC starting in 1977. While on the series, he sang a few of his songs.

But, it seems that Shaun's true love is behind the scenes, writing and producing. He wrote and produced the cult favorite series, "American Gothic" that ran for one season in 1995.

Barbara Carrera: Bond Girl Fatima Blush

Pro Arts 20 x 28

Nicaraguan born, Barbara is a former model who has graced the covers of over 300 magazines. In 1970 she made her acting debut in a film called "Puzzle of A Downfall Child". She was Fatima Blush in the Bond film "Never Say Never, Again" with Sean Connery as Bond and has been nominated for 2 Golden Globe, one in 1976 and the other in 1984.

Charlie's Angels: The Second Trio

1977 Bi Rite

The second season of Charlie's Angels saw Cheryl Ladd come on board as Kris Munroe, the younger sister of Jill played by Farrah Fawcett. Cheryl stayed with the show for the rest of it's run which lasted from 1977 to 81. She did a total of 90 episodes. There were also a multitude of posters released of Cheryl.

Peter Criss: Kiss Drummer

This 22 x 34 poster is from 1978 and the pose graces Peter's solo album. Remember when the members of Kiss each released a solo album? I admit to having copies of three of the four, with Peter's being the only one I didn't have and I liked Gene's the best out of those I was familiar with. But, listening to the sound sample's of Peter's CD...I might just have to rethink that stance.

Peter's solo album didn't sit well with many KISS fans. It seems that most wanted to hear KISS-like material from Peter, or simply hear KISS songs remade with Peter at the helm. Instead he chose to do his own thing and managed to come up with a pretty decent sounding album.

Cathy Lee Crosby: The "Original" Wonder Woman?

Cathy Lee Crosby did a TV movie called Wonder Woman a few years before Lynda Carter came onto the scene. Cathy's version of the Amazon Princess was nothing like the cartoon character and it makes a person wonder if the producers of the movie ever read a Wonder Woman comic.

Cathy was the co host of TV series "That's Incredible" from 1980-84 on ABC. She was also the original choice for Dee Dee McCall on the TV series, Hunter, but the role eventually went to Stepfanie Kramer instead.

This poster is from 1980 and is approximately 20 x 28 in size.

Bo Derek: Once A 10 Always A 10

The Original "10"

Bo came on the scene in a big way, as the ultimate "10" in the movie of the same name. She never had dreams of being a big movie star, but she sure made a big impression in that movie. This pose is one of the rarer posters of Bo and I believe it was released in 1980. She is wearing a leather bikini made for her by her husband, John Derek. He was very much into leather working and made her lots of pretty things. Some clothing designing companies tried to take credit for the bikini design, but it was a John Derek original. Oh and the photo used in this poster is some of John's handiwork, too.

An avid horse lover, Bo titled her 2002 biography "Riding Lessons: Everything That Matters in Life I Learned from Horses". In it she writes candidly about her childhood, her life with and after John. Some might be disappointed that she doesn't dish the dirt the way some biographies do, but it's still a nice introduction to a woman who was treated as nothing but a vacuous bimbo puppet manipulated totally by hubby John.

More Beautiful Poses From Farrah

On the left is "Farrah Flower", 1977 poster release from Pro Arts and one of my favorite poses. This poster was the first Farrah pose I purchased. The classic pose didn't come into my possession until 1979 when it was bundled with her "Farrah Blue" pose.

In 1977, Farrah had a poster released through Pro Arts that was distributed by "Ford Parts and Service Division". So, if you were shopping for a car or having it repaired at a Ford dealership during 1977, you just might have seen this poster hanging on their wall or even gotten a copy for your own. It's another beautiful pose of our golden angel, Farrah.

Farrah Makes Poster History

What salute to posters would be complete without including the one credited with breathing new life into the poster industry! This 20 x 28 poster is a 1976 Pro Arts issue and is # CL-14-507.

Farrah was on the scene making commercials and guest appearances on TV (look for her funny small bit in the episode of the Partridge Family called The Sound of Money) so she had a bit of a following established already. Pro Arts released her poster (a pose she hand picked) and interest in her and her work skyrocketed. Farrah's poster sold millions of copies...I have seen it listed as high as 11 million copies.

"Farrah Blue" is from 1979 (#14-684) and issued through Pro Arts... a beautiful pose from a Playboy spread. A door poster from this same photo shoot was also issued.

Paul Michael Glaser

David Starsky From "Starsky and Hutch"

He was Det. David Starsky on the popular cop drama, Starsky and Hutch, from 1975-79 along side David Soul. Paul has worked steadily in front of and behind the camera, acting and directing. This is a Pro Arts release from 1978.

Tragedy struck Paul in a big way. In 1981, Paul's wife, Elizabeth, after receiving a blood transfusion while giving birth contracted the HIV virus through tainted blood. Later, she would learn that had unknowingly transmitted the virus to her infant daughter, Ariel, through breast feeding and then later to her son, Jake while he was still in the womb. At that time, the medicines available for AIDS treatment were aimed at adults, nothing had been tested on or approved for children which meant that daughter Ariel had no medical hope. In 1988, little Ariel lost her battle with the disease. Determined to give her son a fighting chance, Elizabeth and two of her friends, Susie Zeegen and Susan DeLaurentis created "The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation" aimed at finding funding for HIV/AIDS research. Today the organization has expanded it's mission into other nations as well, working to save the lives of children, through education, research and advocacy. Sadly, Elizabeth lost her battle with AIDS in 1994 at the age of 47, but through her hard work and dedication, her son Jake is a healthy adult who often speaks on behalf of AIDS patients.

The Hardy Boys: Mystery Solving Duo

Shaun Cassidy and Parker Stevenson As Joe and Frank Hardy

A Pro Arts poster of Shaun Cassidy and Parker Stevenson as Joe and Frank Hardy from the 1977 series "The Hardy Boys Nancy Drew Mysteries". Each of these actors would have solo posters released as well. Shaun had a short but successful singing career during the run of the series. If you take a look at Parker's solo poster you will see it's from the same photo shoot as this duo poster. One of Shaun's solo posters is also from the same shoot.

I offer up some commentary about the Hardy Boys Nancy Drew Mysteries Here At My Classic 70's TV lens.

Gregory Harrison: For Ladies Only

Gregory In A TV Movie As A Male Stripper

You might remember him best for his role on TV's "Trapper John M.D." which ran from 1979-86. Pernell Roberts would recreate the role of Trapper (yep, the same character from M.A.S.H) on a new series that co-starred Gregory as Dr. George Alonzo 'Gonzo' Gates.

Gregory has been married to actress Randi Oakes since 1980. They have three children.

This poster, 22 x 32 in size is from "For Ladies Only" a 1981 TV movie that had Gregory starring as a young man who wants to be an actor and who moonlights as a male stripper while waiting on his big break.

Kate Jackson: The Smart Angel

Sabrina of Charlie's Angels

As Sabrina Duncan on Charlie's Angels, Kate never got to be a "sexy" angel. I guess back in the 70's you couldn't be beautiful and brainy or so the TV bigwigs thought. But, this poster shows, to me anyway, that you don't need to be wearing slinky clothes, bikinis or next to nothing in order to be beautiful.

Kate began modeling at 16 and at one time was both a Max Factor and Revlon model. Kate is a breast cancer survivor and uses her experiences with the disease to promote breast cancer awareness.

This pose is from 1977 and a Pro Arts issue titled "Kate" and is #14-514. Kate had at least two other solo posters on the market and several along with her co-stars from Charlie's Angels.

Roz Kelly: Pinky Tuscadero

The Fonz's Girlfriend...For a Few Episodes, Anyway

This poster is by Marathon Graphics published in 1979. It measures about 22 x 34.

Do you remember, Roz? She was Carol "Pinky" Tuscadero, the Fonz's girlfriend on "Happy Days" for a few three episode in 1976. Rumor has it that her personality was a bit abrasive, in other words, she didn't get along well with other cast members and her character was dropped from the show.

Her resume doesn't show much work since the early's 1980's. She was arrested in 1998 for shooting at her neighbor's car when the alarm went off, waking her up. In 2000 she pleaded no contest to the charges and was give a three year probation and ordered to undergo psychiatric counseling.

KISS

Remember when KISS first came on the scene and the controversy they stirred with their outlandish makeup and behavior. Did you ever hear the rumor that got started that "Kiss" actually stood for "Kings in Satan's Service". I think it was started by those same people who played the old record albums backward listening for hidden messages. I heard recordings made of stuff played backward and I could never hear any of those weird messages people claimed was there. :(

Anyway, the poster on the left is from 1976 and about 22 x 34 in size. The copyright is from Aucoin Management, Inc. It is the pose on the cover of their Destroyer album from 1976 which has the classic song "Beth" on it.

The poster on the left is a black light velvet poster produced by Pro Arts in 1976. It is #15-332 and titled simply "KISS". Truly one of the rarer posters out there. I have seen only a few listed on Ebay over the years and they usually sell for hundreds of dollars.

Cheryl Ladd: "Farrah Fawcett-Minor"

The First and Second Editions of The Poster

This 1977 Pro Arts issue of Cheryl Ladd had a bit of problem or so it seemed to the powers that be. The first edition of this pose, showing the top of her red shorts, was taken off the market shortly after being released. I have read that there was some contention over a slight ripple of fat on Cheryl's belly that just wasn't acceptable material for on a poster. Now, personally, I can't see anything fat about Cheryl, but then I guess I don't have the right kind of eye for that thing. The second issue of the poster is cropped at the bottom and personally, I admit, I like this version better. It would have made much more sense to me to have reissued the poster because of wanting to crop out the top of the red shorts, but what do I know. :) Oh and I have seen other poses from the yellow kimono photo shoot and I am not so sure if they picked the right pose to use as a poster, but then again, what do I know? :)

Oh and the Farrah Fawcett Minor thing, is actually something Cheryl did on her first day of filming Charlie's Angels... she came out onto the set wearing a T-shirt with that printed on the front.

More Cheryl Posters

In my mind, the most beautiful Cheryl Ladd pose came to us in the form of this 1979 Pro Arts pose called "Cheryl Black". Cheryl had a multitude of posters on the market, solo poses and with her co stars from Charlie's Angels.

The poster on the right, Pro Arts issue is called "Cheryl Lace" (catalog # 14-605).

Joe Namath Football's Super Star

Broadway Joe

Joe came to fame as a football player. The height of his career as a quarterback came in 1969 with the New York Jets win over the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III.

Joe went on to do commercials (remember the Noxema Shaving Cream commercials with pre-famous Farrah!) and some acting work in a few movies and TV series.

This poster is from 1977 and I believe it is a Pro Arts issue.

Olivia Newton John: A Sweet Voice And a Beautiful Poster!

1978 Pro Arts

What a beautiful poster from a super talented lady. She has sold over 100 million records world wide and is an avid activist for breast cancer awareness (being a breast cancer survivor after being diagnosed with the disease in 1992) as well as an avid activist for environmental issues.

This pose, from 1978, can also be found on the cover of her 1977 greatest hits vol. 2 album.

Randi Oakes

Officer Bonnie Clark on "CHiPs"

This is a 1980 poster from C/C Sales and measures about 22 x 34. Randi has been married to actor Gregory Harrison (who has a few posters of his own to his credit) since 1980. You might remember Randi from the series "CHiPS" playing "Officer Bonnie Clark" from 1979 to 82.

Jaclyn Smith: Charlie's Angels Beauty

I don't think I have ever seen an unattractive photo of this beautiful woman. Jaclyn had a multitude of posters released in solo poses as well as those with her Angel's co stars.

The pose on the left is titled simply "Jaclyn" and was issued by Pro Arts in 1977 (Catalog # 14-515) and it measures the usual 20 x 28. Beside it, is Jaclyn being a little more playful in this pose is also a Pro Arts issue titled "Pink" (Catalog #14-692).

Of course we seem to most associated Jaclyn with her role as Kelly Garrett on "Charlie's Angels". Her character was a cross between Sabrina (Kate Jackson) and Jill (Farrah Fawcett). She was athletic like Jill and smart like Sabrina with a beauty all her own. Many claim her to be the most beautiful angel of the three, even though Farrah gained most of the attention.

Suzanne Somers: Chrissy Snow of Three's Company

This 1977 Dargis Associates pose of Suzanne shows her in the role that made her famous, air headed Chrissy Snow on the classic series, "Three's Company". You might also remember that she asked for more money per episode and was promptly fired from the show... only being seen for about 1 minute per episode until the remainder of her contract was fulfilled. She went on to success in Las Vegas and worked on two other TV series, "She's The Sheriff" from 1987 to 89 and then co starring with Patrick Duffy in the series, "Step by Step" from 1991-98. Suzanne is also a successful business woman as well as author of six books. No too bad a career for an "air head" huh?

Suzanne's Official Web Page

Parker Stevenson:Half of The Hardy Boys!

Hardy Boys Nancy Drew Mysteries. Frank Hardy

Parker had been involved in the acting scene before getting his big break as Frank Hardy on the "Hardy Boys Nancy Drew Mysteries" that ran from 1977-79 on ABC TV. Of course, though, it was Shaun Cassidy (who also had a few posters available) who gained the most attention on the show as Joe Hardy. Shaun had several hit songs while working on the show, remember those? And remember the running joke they had going... every time Joe (Shaun Cassidy) was poised to sing one of his songs on an episode, Frank (Parker) would wander off some where and miss his brother's performance.

Heather Thomas: Pretty In Pink, Too

Jody of "The Fall Guy" Series

You probably remember Heather from the Lee Majors hit TV series, "The Fall Guy", right?

Heather left acting in 1998 to work on getting a screen writing career started. She has written a book that has garnered some great reviews. It's called "Trophies".

There were a multitude of posters of Heather, but I like the pink bikini best. It is titled simply "Heather Thomas" and the number is #2129. It was a popular poster and it measures 24 x 36 and was released in 1980.

Cheryl Tiegs: Super Model

Cheryl's career started at age 17 when she began to grace the covers of popular magazines like Vogue, Glamor, Seventeen and more. She was the first model to appear three times on the cover of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issues and she has made the cover of Time Magazine three times.

Cheryl has had many titles aside from super model; businesswoman (has her own line of skin care products) author, avid spokesperson for the environment and underprivileged children.

This poster on the left is a 1977 pose and the photographer was Bill King. The poster on the right is from 1978, a Pro Arts issue (catalog #140591) and is titled "Ms. Tiegs".

I have read that this pose of Cheryl rivals Farrah's posters in terms of units sold, but I have never read any stats to verify that

John Travolta: Welcome Back Kotter's Vinnie Barbarino

This is a 1978 pose of John by photographer Jim Fridley who was a Playgirl Magazine photographer. The poster measures 22x28.

Of course who can forget that John gained star status as Vinnie Barbarino on "Welcome Back Kotter", a comedy series that began in 1975 and ran for four years. John was in 79 of the 92 episodes filmed. He went on to begin a career on the big screen, although he did have bit parts in a few big screen movies, before getting his role on Kotter. His work in the film Saturday Night Fever garnered him, at age 24, an Oscar nomination for Best Actor, but he lost to Richard Dreyfuss.

Lindsay Wagner: The One And Only Bionic Woman

Catapulted to fame as Jamie Somers, "The Bionic Woman" in the series of the same name, Lindsay went on to have a very successful career in the entertainment industry.

Before acting, Lindsay was a model for several years and soon grew to hate it, stating that she often felt like just a piece of meat. She turned her attention to acting and her big break came when she guest starred as Steve Austin's childhood sweetheart, Jamie Sommers, on the Six Million Dollar Man. Her character was so well liked that when she died the outcry was so loud that producers found a way to bring her back to life. She was given her own show which debuted January 1976 on ABC and ran for two seasons on that network before being picked up for the last season on NBC in 1978.

The pose on the left is a Pro Arts issue and is 20 x 28 and is #14-523 and titled "Sommers". Compared to other popular actresses around the same time, there aren't a lot of posters of Lindsay.

The poster on the right is from 1976 and titled "Jamie". I believe it is a Pro Arts issue as well.

Raquel Welch: Classic Beauty

A Pro Arts pose from 1978. It's 20 x 28 and is # 14-582. Of course, this isn't the first poster of Raquel. In 1973 there was a poster issued of Raquel in a yellow bikini among other poses.
