Robert Wolverton Jr.
RWJR's studio is located in Bartlett, Tn....next door to Memphis. Schools attended were MTSU, University of Memphis and Columbia State with a focus towards graphic design and studio art.Artist Statement: One of my favorite quotes is by Joseph Campbell, "Follow your bliss...". That is exactly what painting is for me, Bliss. Art has the power to effect people both in a positive way and in a negative way. The fact that we feel these emotions is what makes it art. I intend to follow my bliss and continue painting, learning and teaching what I know and have seen along the way. My hope is that I inspire others to follow their bliss and along the way people might connect with my artwork.
People say that what we're all seeking is a meaning for life. I don't think that's what we're really seeking. I think what we're seeking is an experience of being alive, so that our life experiences on the purely physical plane will have resonances within our own innermost being and reality, so that we actually feel the rapture of being alive....Joseph Campbell.

Some of my earliest influences were by artists like Monet, Van Gogh and Andre Derain.I loved their use of brush strokes and use of movement in their compositions. I started my art school in 1993 but didn't start painting until around 1997.
I was living in Middle Tennessee on a farm and painting mostly landscape pieces. I didn't really have very much confidence but wanted to create and paint, so I did, just not that much. I painted about ten paintings in 1997, some of which are still in my collection and available. These pieces were done in an an impressionistic style. The painting pictured is one of them,Dead Sunflowers, and is one of my very first paintings. It was made with acrylics on a flat canvas panel. I later framed it in 2000 with a snake pattern around the frame. The image is of my front yard at the time and the sunflowers that were bent over. They reminded me of workers in a field planting seeds, ironically that is exactly what they were doing. Funky Folk Fish

I've been painting my, Funky Folk Fish since 2000. At the time I worked in construction and we were remodeling a Historic Home in dowtown Memphis that had a cedar shake shingle roof. I ended up taking some of the left over shingles home and decided to paint on them. The earlier fish were very raw and brut, with a tribal style to them. They were very abstract and did not represent any kind of real fish.
In 2004 I started selling them on e-Bay and have sold hundreds of them over the years. I have also sold them in open air markets, set up on the street, art shows, galleries and commissioned pieces for private collections. I've painted them on skis and the top part of a wooden gates, cut off pieces of wood and driftwood. Over the years I have expanded them into specific kinds of fish, to make pieces like: Trout, Redfish, Bass, Betas ect... Funky Folk Fish.
I still paint these sometimes and always are open to commissioned pieces, I've got skis and shingles ready! Commission a piece

In 2000, I started painting with a serious focus. I had traveled to Europe and had seen some of the original pieces that had inspired me years before by Van Gogh. Seeing the art scene in Amsterdam really made me want to get home and start slinging some paint. That was where I celebrated New Years for the millenium, and had visions for a new plan with my art.I started reliving the art of the 80's I grew up with, pop graffiti type styles, and looking back at what had been done. I gained inspiration from unique Artists like Pablo Picasso, Jean Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring and Andy Warhol. This would start my mixing of styles to create what I consider raw pure art. I love to use mixed media and collage materials, creating big works that move the viewer. Recently I've been influenced by some of the recent artists like Banksy, Shepard Fairey and Kaws.

Color Psychology
Now Read What Your Color Means
Use of color to create ambiance has been studied in color psychology of people. Color has long been used to create feelings of coziness or spaciousness. However, how people are affected by different color stimuli varies from person to person.The hues in the blue range have been shown to have the highest preference amongst people.
There is evidence that suggests that people tend to prefer certain colors depending on the ambient temperature. People who are cold prefer warm colors like red and yellow while people who are hot prefer cool colors like blue and green.
Studies have shown that colors have an effect on people's moods and emotions. One problem that exists is that these studies are inconsistent on determining which colors bring out or reflect specific moods and emotions. In other words, the relationship between color and behavioral response exists but there hasn't been any consistency as to how it exists.
Some research has concluded that women tend to feel pleasant seeing "warm" colors while men tend to feel pleasant seeing "cool" colors.
A few studies have shown that cultural background has a strong influence on color preference. These studies have shown that people from the same region regardless of race will have the same color preferences. Also, one region may have different preferences than another region (i.e., a different country or a different area of the same country), regardless of race.
Children's preferences for colors they find to be pleasant and comforting can be changed and can vary, while adult color preference is usually non-malleable.
