Clovice Lewis: A Living Classical Composer

Ranked #13,731 in Music, #377,014 overall | Donates to Squidoo Charity Fund

Jazz and Classical Music Writer

The old, dead guys like Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, etc. might have written some fine stuff, but they don't have a clue about life in the 21st century. Clovice Lewis, a musical wunderkind who wrote his first symphony at the age of 17, brings life into a musical genre viewed as old and stuffy by blending it with contemporary sounds and rhythms. Hence the name of his music company and style: Jazzical Music (http://www.jazzicalmusic.com). You can also purchase his music at http://www.composercentral.com.

A bit of history....

Clovice composed his first symphony when he was 17 years old, and has been the recipient of numerous awards since then. At the age of 22, he was appointed as an Associate Professor of Computer Music at the University of California in Santa Barbara. From 1978 until 1984 he was one of only a few dozen people in the United States to hold such a position. In 1984 Clovice founded Technology Media Enterprises, a consulting firm which specializes in the creation of all aspects of multimedia production. Jazzical Music knows all about computers and music; they literally helped "write the book" about the subject.

Bassoon Concerto #1,Movement #1

Performed by Rufus Olivier and the Nova Vista Orchestra, Emily Ray Conducting

This piece has its genesis in the time several years ago when Clovice had the pleasure of playing cello in an orchestra where Rufus Olivier appeared as a soloist. He was impressed with his virtuosity... his musicianship, tone, and most of all, his jazz-like style.

The first movement of this piece, "Looking a Long Time", is representative of the many changes Clovice experienced which affected nearly every part of his life after my first divorce. The second poem, "...For Carol", was composed for, and about his new wife, Carol (me!).

Alhambra

This was a performance of a Trio for two flutes and Cello composed by Clovice A. Lewis, Jr. entitled 'Alhambra. The performance was in 1998 at the Petite Trianon in San Jose. Sarah Lloyd and Francesca Cox played flute and Clovice played cello. Note that Clovice plays the cello like a guitar for much of the piece. This results in a Spanish-sounding piece that is a real crowd-pleaser.
