Clearing Clutter Creates Flow

Karen Kingston's book "Clear Your Clutter with Feng Shui" tells us that "Clutter" comes from the Middle English word "clotter," which means to coagulate.

That very thought has spurred me on to new Clutter Clearing heights of clutter clearing. I'm feeling oh so better. Everything is beginning to flow!

So in that spirit of flow, here are some things I've learned and want to share. Please chime in!

Thanks, Deb

Clearing Clutter is Healthy and Oh, So Much More...

I live in what I have always considered a pretty clutter-free home. But after reading Karen Kingston's book "Clear Clutter with Feng Shui," I've realized I can still do with less. I started last week. The little clutter I have already cleared has had a surprising affect on me. Karen is ruthless in her suggestions (empty the trash every day!) but gentle and convincing in her approach. I have managed to give away and throw away several boxes. I truly didn't believe I had that much! The things I didn't toss, I started using again.

Karen defines clutter as:
Things you don't love
Things that are untidy and disorganized
Too many things in too small a space
Anything unfinished

She even told me that the word "clutter" comes from the Middle English word "clotter," which means to coagulate. Okay, I get the picture all too vividly.

The problem with all this clutter is what she calls "stuck energy." As clutter accumulates, energy around your space slows. And as that energy slows, more clutter accumulates. The result? You become what you see; tired, confused, in disharmony and disorganized. Your life is literally put on hold. There's just no space for anything new.

Here's the good news. By clearing clutter, you change the possibilities in your life. A week ago Sunday, I cleaned out my jewelry. On Monday, I received a totally unexpected gift in the mail, a beautiful silver bracelet that was just right for me. No, it wasn't my birthday. The giver just thought I'd like it. And I do! Hmmm. I think I'll clean out the garage this week.

Organizing Help

Organizing gear makes the job easier...

Yup, getting organized can be much easier with the right tools. Keep in mind, however that if you're buying tools, you're adding to what you own. Buy it only if it will help you get rid of clutter, not just reorganize it. Remember, just because your clutter looks nicer does not mean you'll be any healthier.

Be Brave

Thowing out makes you healthier

The best tool, in my opinion is a good trash can or something bigger like
a dumpster if you've really got clutter issues. Or, take a trip to Goodwill.
Just be sure you drive around to the drop-off site. DO NOT go inside. It's
too dangerous for collectors of "stuff." For some things, eBay
might be an option. Whatever your route, take a warrior attitude and move
your clutter out!

So Much Clutter

My Top Ten Clutter Clearing Tips

I'm no expert. But I've developed some techniques that work well for me. Take them, try them, they're all yours.

1. For every item I bring in to my home, one item must go out. That goes for everything, even mail.
2. Four times a year, I start pitching until 25 things have gone (100 items a year).
3. I do not print hard copies of documents and papers I can just as easily keep and read on my computer.
4. The library has become my friend. I give them books (just in case I might want to read them again--never have though) and I borrow books.
5. I've realized that a collection, whatever the collection might be (books, dishes, clothing, hats, shoes, etc.), is a way for me to not deal with an emotion. That's what I work on, the emotion.
6. I use those things I consider precious, even if they might break or wear out. I'm not going to live forever.
7. Unwanted mail does not even enter the house. It goes into a recycling bag in the garage.
8. I go to the recycling center once a week, no matter how much or how little I have to recycle.
9. I reward myself with things that can be used up or have a life span; like, fresh flowers, chocolate, bath soap and bubble bath, candles, a nice meal, ...
10. I turned the home office back into a bedroom. This forced me to downsize my office needs (laptop computer, online fax service, files on disk, etc.) and put things away at the end of my day.

Pack it Up or Pitch it Out?

What's your inclination? Are you one who just can't get rid of something? Afraid you may need it as soon as it's gone? Or are you so good at pitching things that others follow you around hoping for a great find?

Do you keep it or pitch it?

Mickie_G says:

I do not hoard, I just store stuff. I do so need to de-clutter!

I use it or lose it

AlphaChic says:

Pitch it! I spent the first half of my life collecting clutter. Now I am spending the second half throwing it out.

Graceonline says:

I discovered Kingston's book years ago, smack dab in the middle of a five-year mission to downsize from a 3-bedroom home to a 1-bedroom city apartment. We'd already cleared more than half of our belongings, including our house and one car! But Kingston's book helped me clear even more. We still have too much stuff, and Kingston's guidelines continue to be of great help in reducing the clutter--and choosing not to buy things we don't really need and won't want in six months.

kathysart says:

I am pretty good about passing things on that I don't use.

gottaloveit says:

I'm slowly starting to pitch more and more things and it is very freeing. Now, with 6 dogs watching me carefully, what's next?....Hmmmm.....

Koupie says:

I am not one to hang on to things anymore, but I used to be. I would say my home is more and more clutter free each year.

Kamil says:

Hi,

That's a very important point you mentioned that I almost forgot about, so thanks for reminding. I would like to recommend articles by Ron G. Holland. They are more about wealth than health, but very good.. One of my favourite is http://www.wealth.co.uk/2009/10/well-just-how-is-wealth-created/ - very short, but up to the point about wealth creation.

Cheers
Kamil

DebMartin says:

Pack it up and move it on. I come from a family of pack rats. I've learned my lessons the hard way. Everything is healthier when it circulates.

Very good subject and one I think we all need to learn from! :)

Inspired! This also applies to the folders on your computer! I inherited a computer when I started a new job, and it was a mess of folders and duplications. It was overwhelming, so I decided I must get rid of 10 files per day...it felt so good I upped it to 20 then 30, before you know it my computer was nicely organized and my folders appropriately named containing the right stuff! Felt so good and its so nice to find things now without using the search field....ahhhhh.

THe other day I was looking for a pin number to my debit card, I never found it but it led to a four hour cleaning binge with all my drawers and "piles" of papers. It felt sooo good!!!

Yup, that's how it starts. A little addicting, isn't it? Congratulations!

Glad to see this here. Sometimes I marvel at the thousands of dollars worth of junk--almost literally junk--we have purchased, only to give it away in a year or two. We are learning to make better decisions about impulse buys and purchasing decisions, but we have a long way to go. Thank you for this reminder.

This is inspiring! If only I could convince my mom and grandma, who are borderline hoarders sometimes, to follow suit! I am looking forward to moving in a few years because it offers a chance to reevaluate every item I own, to give up or recycle or upcycle the things I don't regularly use or enjoy or need--which is a LOT of stuff! Thanks for this great lens!

This little piece of equipment (yes it's one more thing in the house) has saved me oh so much room! I no longer have file cabinets.

Every document that is important to keep is scanned and stored on my computer and my backup drive.

For instance, Income Taxes used to require storage of reams and reams of paper from receipts to property tax info to pay stubs to utility and other bills. Now it's nothing more than a few digital files stored under the correct year. And my tax preparer always sends me the final tax forms in digital format and I just add them to that year's digital file folder.
