I Love My Cobb BBQ

I bought my Cobb BBQ back in 2004 at an outdoor show after seeing one that my cousin had bought and it has stood the test of time and given me many memorable meals. So I wanted to create a page to share why I think my Cobb BBQ is so great and I have even included one of my favourite recipes at the bottom of this page.

I am a keen offroad and 4x4 enthusiast, camper and self proclaimed general backyard super chef (aren't we all) and I was looking for a portable bbq that was robust enough to take along on camping and offroading trips and also use in the more tame environment of my backyard.

Since that happy day back in 2004 when I brought the barbeque home from the outdoor show it has been a constant companion on safari's, camping trips, day trips and weekends in the backyard.

It has been everywhere with me and I do mean everywhere and some of the places I have taken and used it are;

Kruger National Park in South Africa
Okavango Delta in Botswana
Namib Desert in Namibia
Chobe Game Reserve in Botswana
Khutse Game Reserve in Botswana
Mountain Park Resort in South Africa
Swakopmund in Namibia
Central Kalahari Game Reserve in Botswana
County Kerry in Ireland
County Kilkenny in Ireland
and on many happy weekends in my respective backyards in the various houses I have lived in over the years in South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and Ireland.

Hopefully if all goes to plan the Cobb will be going on its first visit to France for a camping trip in the summer.

It has been knocked around countless times in the back of an offroad trailer, left too close the campfire (once), packed off on a trans atlantic voyage from Walvis Bay to Dublin and been dropped a few times (I am a bit of a klutz). So as a result it has developed a some "character" over the years but amazingly it is still going strong.

It is my unbreakable portable outdoor cooking companion or "daddys little helper" as I like to call it. Yes "cheesy" I know but it's my Cobb and I Love It.

10 Reasons Why I Love My Cobb

1. Versatility
2. Compact and Packs Easily
3. Robust and Sturdy
4. Lightweight
5. Easy to Use
6. Saves Charcoal
7. Cooking Options for Every Occasion
8. Cleans in the Dishwasher
9. Can go on the Tabletop
10. Virtually Smokeless

What is a Cobb BBQ?

The Cobb BBQ is an award winning, super efficient portable bbq that can grill, bake , roast, smoke, boil and fry anything.

It is a lightweight (it weighs 8.5lbs or 4kgs) and compact portable bbq that can cook for up to three hours using just 8 charcoal briquettes. Its design allows fat and oil to drain away for healthy and virtually smokeless cooking.

The Cobb BBQ can even be used on a table top because the base stays cool to the touch on the outside even when its at full temperature inside. It also comes apart easily to allow it to be washed in a dishwasher for ease of cleaning and maintenance.

There is an assortment of accessories available for the Cobb BBQ to enhance its versatility and provide you with a cooking option for every occasion including a carry bag, wok, skillet (frying pan), grill pan and roast rack.

The Cobb BBQ was voted invention of the year by TIME magazine and has also won numerous other awards.

Cooking With My Cobb BBQ

I enjoy outdoor cooking especially when I go camping and offroading but pretty much any excuse to be cooking outdoors will do. I am not a tinned frank and beans kind of guy so I like to try and make things a little more interesting by cooking a variety of meals outdoors. At times I even set myself a challenge to see what I can pull off whist out and about.

So some of the things that I have cooked using my Cobb BBQ whilst camping, offroading and just in the back yard include;

Beer Bread (see below for how to make this), Roast Chicken, Roast Potatoes and Vegetables, Roast Beef, Grilled Steaks, Bacon and Eggs, Omlettes, Campfire Scones, Pancakes, Boerewors (a South African sausage), Stirfry, Spaghetti Bolognaise, Kebabs, Prawns and Ravioli to name a few.

The interchangable wok, skillet (frying pan), grill pan and roast rack provide you with a multitude of options for cooking a variety of different foods.

Make Beer Bread With Your Cobb BBQ

This bread is always a winner and is quick and easy to make. There are 2 ways to make this bread with a Cobb BBQ.

The first method is to use a small loaf tin, it must be able to fit under the dome.

Step1 Light your Cobb and wait for it to get up to temperature.

Step 2 Make the bread mixture as per the recipe below

Step 3 Put the mixture into the loaf tin (grease the tin with butter or a non stick spray)

Step 4 Put the loaf tin onto the roast rack of the Cobb and put the dome on and bake for about 35 mins.

The second method is to use a round cast iron pot with a lid. The pot must be the same circumference as the Cobb.

Step1 Light your Cobb and wait for it to get up to temperature.

Step 2 Make the bread mixture as per the receipe below

Step 3 Put the mixture into the pot (grease the pot with butter or a non stick spray) and put the lid on the pot.

Step 4 Put the pot on the Cobb and take some hot coals and out them on top of the pot lid.

Step 5 Put the Cobb dome on top of the pot and bake for about 35 mins.

The mixture

2 and 3 quarter cups of self raising flour
2 tablespoons of white onion soup mix
1 tablespoon chopped chives
1 tablespoon chopped parsley
Half a teaspoon dried mixed herbs
1 cup grated chedder cheese
1 tin of beer

Combine the dry ingredients with 3 quarters of the cheese. Stir in the beer and mix until its an even consistency. Bake using one of the methods above. Once its ready add the remaining cheese on top of the loaf and leave it to melt for a few minutes. After 10 minutes turn the loaf out onto a wire rack to cool. Eat and enjoy.
