Cocoa Beach Florida and the Space Coast

Cocoa Beach and the Space Coast

I have lived in Cocoa Beach for 7 years, and love it. The beach, the launches, the people, and activities are all first class. The beach is the closest to Orlando and Disney World.

Cocoa Beach is about in the center of the "Space Coast" with Patrick Air Force Base to the South, and the Cape Canaveral/Kennedy Space Center to the North. We are on a barrier island bordered on the East by the Atlantic Ocean and the Banana River to the West. The Banana River and the Indian River to the West of it are part of the Indian River Lagoon and the Intercoastal Waterway.

Things you shouldn't miss!

There is a lot to do and see in and around Cocoa Beach and the Space Coast

If you come to the area it may be difficult to decide what to do. We have:
The beach of course
The Cocoa Beach Pier sticking 800 feet into the Atlantic
Shuttle and rocket launches
Colombia Space Shuttle Taking off at Night

Kennedy Space Center
Indian River Lagoon
Merritt Island Wildlife Preserve
Astronaut Hall of Fame
Titusville Police Hall of Fame and state of the art gun range
Jetty Park
Ron Jons - just because it is there
First class fishing
Kayak and boat tours
The Cocoa Beach Country Club ( open to the public)

STS-126 on the pad with full moon

Nov 14, 2008

What a site this was! The picture hardly does it justice.

STS-126 Coming Home to KSC

STS-126 gave the residents on the Space Coast a double treat. First, it was launched on Nov. 14, 2008 at 7:55 PM against a night sky and a full moon low on the horizon. I had the privilege of being invited to watch the launch from the Viewing area only 3 miles across the Banana River from Launch Pad 39A. It was one spectacular sight to witness.
Then, some 2 weeks later the Shuttle was forced to land at Edwards Air Force base in California. This meant the Shuttle had to be flown to the Cape on the back of a specially modified 747. The pilot was given permission to take the 747 East to the Atlantic Ocean over Patrick AFB to the South. He then headed North just off the beach at a fairly low altitude and slow speed.
I was watching with some neighbors from the 5th floor walkway of our condo building, it was sight every bit as inspiring and beautiful as the night launch earlier.
The picture was taken with my Canon 40D and a 300mm F4.0 L USM IS AF Lens - translation a 300 MM Canon "White" lens with Image Stabilization ( great for old guys).

Well, its Spring Break time in Cocoa Beach. A1A is heavy with traffc most of the day making entering and exiting from anyplace an excercise in patience and frustration.
The beach is, of course, pretty well packed, espcially at the Pier, Coconuts on the Beach.,
    and the Parks.
The price we pay for living in a tourist area, wouldn't trade it for about anything.
