The feeds on this page have been reworked using Amazon's Web-Services (AWS) API, making them considerably more "bullet-proof" than the original screen-scraped versions. The jury is still out on whether it's better to show one example product for each feed or to list the titles only for all featured products.

Coffee Makers and Grinders

Before you rush out and buy the first coffee maker you see, read Amazon.com's excellent article: How to Buy: Coffeemakers and Grinders which covers drip, percolator, and french press systems as well as both burr and blade grinders.

Varous forms of drip systems are the most popular, including the newer on-demand and single cup units which are designed to minimize the negative effects of heat on the brew. The increasingly popular espresso machines are covered separately, but coffee/espresso combos are here, as are moka pots, vacuum brewers, and various accessories, including the increasingly popular bean roasters.

"Coffee Roasters"

Coffee beans begin to oxidize and deteriorate after roasting (which is why they are shipped from their point of origin "green" and roasted more locally.) For a true gourmet coffee experience, consider roasting your own beans. This not only gives you the freshest grounds possible, but gives you control over the temperature and degree of roasting which affects the all-important volatile oils that give coffee its flavor.

Burr Coffee Grinders

The knurled surfaces of the conical burrs in these grinders grip the surfaces of the bean and shred the vegetable matter with little damage to its cellular structure. Thus, they produce superior grounds with little or no dust to cause over-extraction and bitterness in brewing. If you're going the extra mile to use freshly ground beans, don't settle for an inferior blade "grinder."

Blade Coffee "Grinders"

Blade "grinders" are really bean choppers, randomly slicing whatever comes before their whirling blades, and producing a lot of heat and dust. They provide little or no control over the "coarseness" or "fineness" of the grind, and are really quite inferior to burr grinders. If you care enough about high-quality coffee to use fresh-ground beans, it is unlikely that you will be happy with one of these.

I've never quite been sure what distinguishes a blog from a regular webpage. Timeliness seems to have something to do with it, but that doesn't seem to be a hard and fast rule.

Anyway, here are some of the things I've been working on lately...
