The First Cup Of Coffee

The mere mention of the word 'coffee' sparks memories of an aroma that lasts a lifetime. Coffee, a liquid jewel that varies in strength, flavor, and color is based on its origins, roast, and grind. The quality of this liquid jewel is based on where it is grown, and how it is processed. It's preparation is varied as the cultures it represents.

In many parts of the world, preparing and sharing a cup of coffee is a ceremony. Coffee is one of the few things in the world that can stimulate the weary, and relax the stressed. Here is where you will find information, links, and videos to all things coffee.

My Mamau's Coffee

My love for coffee began at the tender age of three when my Grandmother shared her 'coffee soak' with me. I always loved visiting my grandparents, and this one morning I got up with her and the birds, and kept my Mamau company in the kitchen.

My Mamau made her coffee on an old gas stove. She filled her pot with cold well water, and spooned ground coffee into the metal basket. Once the water in the pot began to boil and bubble, the smell of coffee began to waft around the kitchen. My Mamau knew when the coffee was done and how strong the brew would be based on the aroma that filled the room .

She smiled as she took the pot off the stove, and poured herself a cup of coffee. I couldn't help but notice the magic I witnessed, and was totally amazed at how a pot of cold well water could be made to smell so good.

As Mamau took a sip from her cup, she looked over at me. Then, she reached into the cupboard, and got another cup. She went to the bread box and pulled out a glazed cake doughnut, and broke it apart in the bottom of the coffee cup. She poured a bit of whole milk over the crumbled doughnut and shook a little a cinnamon on it. I watched as Mamau then poured just enough coffee into the cup to warm it's contents. She stirred the mix until the liquid in the cup looked like a velvet gold, then handed the cup and spoon to me. Mamau's Coffee Soak is the same recipe her father shared with her.

Fifty+ years later, I still remember her smile and that morning we shared together as though it were yesterday. She not only shared a cup of coffee with me, she shared a cup of love.

Life With Coffee

My Papau With chase & Sanborn

I began serving coffee at home when I was five, and learned how to brew a pot of coffee when I was six. Every now and then I would sneak a sip from my Dad's cup to make sure it was not too weak or too strong, nothing more.

I was not allowed to drink coffee as a child, but one of my household responsibilities was to make coffee for my hard-working parents. During those years, I learned a lot about coffee, and how it was made, shared, and enjoyed.

Growing up with working parents meant growing up with their working friends, as well. Many of their friends were immigrants transplanted from Europe after World War 2. From my parents friends, I learned something about coffee customs from other parts of the world.

I learned at an early age that coffee tends to bring good people together, and for me, it all began in my Mamau's kitchen over my Papau's store.

My Daily Coffee Note

"If the sun shines but for only a moment,
share your hot cup with the world and reflect good cheer."

Some people read tea leaves in the bottom of their cup. I read the reflection of the light that bounces off the coffee in mine. My morning cup of coffee is part of my art, and the start of a new day. Thanks to technology, I can share my morning coffee with you.

Chase & Sanborn - Chase & Sanborn Coffee is an American coffee company established in 1862. It claims to be the first coffee company to pack and ship roasted coffee in sealed tins. When Standard Brands was formed in 1929 it acquired Chase & Sanborn, where it remained until 1981 when the company merged into Nabisco. Kraft Foods sold the brand to Sara Lee in 2002, and the Chase & Sanborn, Hills Bros., MJB, and Chock Full O' Nuts brands were sold to Massimo Zanetti Beverage Group in 2006.

MJB -- The production of MJB began in 1881. In 1899, Max Brandenstein established the M.J. Brandenstein Company, a spice and coffee import business that took over the brand, with his brothers Mannie, Charlie and Eddie. The company's name was later changed to the MJB Co. to minimise sibling rivalry and disguise their German-Jewish origins. Nestle acquired MJB in 1985. In December 1999, Sara Lee Corp. acquired MJB, along with Hills Brothers and Chase & Sanborn, from Nestle. In December 2005, Massimo Zanetti Beverage Group acquired several US retail coffee businesses, including MJB, Hills Brothers, Chase & Sanborn, and Chock Full o' Nuts, from Sara Lee for US$82.5 million.

Chock full o'Nuts is a chain of lunch counters in New York City that spawned a brand of coffee. In 1953, the coffee brand was introduced to supermarkets. In 1999 Sara Lee purchased Chock Full o Nuts, and as of 2006, it is owed by the Massimo Zanetti Beverage USA, along with the MJB, Hills Bros., and Chase & Sanborn coffee brands.

Hills Bros. Coffee -- In 1900, Hills Brothers began packing roast coffee in vacuum sealed tins. They incorporated under the Hills Brothers name in 1906. In 1984 they purchased the name and manufacturing facilities of the Chase & Sanborn Coffee Company. In 1985 Nestlé bought the brand and sold it to Sara Lee in 1999. Massimo Zanetti Beverage USA purchased the brand in 2005

Maxwell House -- Introduced in 1892, it is named in honor of the Maxwell House Hotel in Nashville, Tennessee. It is still produced in the USA, and is currently owned by Kraft Foods.

Luzianne -- in the 1890s, grocer William Reily noticed the high demand for coffee products and by 1902, decided to move south to New Orleans to start a business that would roast, grind, package and distribute canned coffee. In December 1902 he started his coffee business and the Luzianne brand was born. The business is still alive today, and operating in New Orleans, LA.

Folgers - The Folger Coffee Company was founded in San Francisco, California as the Pioneer Steam Coffee and Spice Mills in 1850, and acquired and renamed by James A. Folger in 1872. It is currently owned by the J.M. Smucker Company, USA.

Eight O'Clock Coffee is the brand name of the light roast of coffee introduced by the American supermarket chain A&P in 1859. Today Eight O'Clock coffee is the third largest seller of whole bean coffee in the U.S. It is also claimed to be the best tasting coffee out in the market. The Eight O'Clock Coffee company is headquartered in Montvale, NJ and produces its coffee in Landover, MD.
