Replacement Therapy Or Cold Turkey Quitting Smoking ?

Ranked #63,309 in Education, #1,020,710 overall

Replacement therapy and cold turkey quitting for smoking cessation represent two of the most common options chosen by those wishing to give up the habit for good. Each one has its specific benefits. Replacement therapy generally enjoys a higher success rate as the smoker is spared the worst of the nicotine fits that accompany giving up smoking. Cold turkey quitting is generally much more difficult but carries with it the psychological benefit of having conquered an addiction with no assistance from any replacement therapy or other method of lessening the symptoms of quitting smoking.

Replacement Therapy

Replacement therapy generally involves supplying the body with a lesser amount of nicotine than would be provided by cigarettes.

The replacement therapy also uses a much safer mechanism of delivery for the nicotine, usually gum, patches or lozenges. Unlike cold turkey quitting, the smoker who uses replacement therapy doesn't actually stop using nicotine when they stop smoking cigarettes.

This allows them to focus on one problem at a time. While nicotine is moderately addictive, the entire ritual of smoking is far more addictive in its totality than nicotine alone. By giving up the smoking ritual without depriving the body of nicotine some smokers increase their chances of long-term success.

Cold Turkey Quitting

Cold turkey quitting smoking is probably one of the hardest things anyone can do.

It means exactly what it says: The smoker wakes up on a particular day and promises themselves that they will never smoke another cigarette.

Smokers who use this method face the double difficulty of giving up nicotine and smoking on the same day. They also may need to give up certain beverages and foods that trigger the urge to smoke, particularly coffee.

As one may guess, this can make the first morning without a cigarette or coffee particularly difficult for the smoker and, unfortunately, for those around them.
